Chapter sixteen

Ultimatum

Josiah caught up with Sara and the others just at the edge of the forest. A hundred-foot gap separated the trees from the base of the mountain, a gap that seemed to be cursed. There was no gradual die-off of the trees, it was a sudden and sharp end, followed by black soil without a scrap of vegetation. Directly in front of the path, a large crater had been blasted into the stone of the spire, the final resting place of the overcharged bullet. This had, of course, utterly obliterated the lower forty feet of the path that led up the side of the thing, which was a bit frustrating. Making it slightly better, though, was the fact that Josiah could see the torchlights of Anthony and his team. They were climbing the spire, yes, but they were only three-quarters of the way to the top. That was still a long way from their goal.

Now… If Josiah was doing the math right, it also meant that Anthony had been climbing said spire for the better part of twenty-four hours. That was quite a slog, and Josiah didn’t know what that meant about the place.

“Alright. Let’s check this out.” Sara waved her hand, and a mirror appeared in front of them. With another wave, a blue orb appeared just above it, and the mirror changed to show what the ball was seeing. She pointed her staff up the mountain, and the sphere flew straight up, darting across the trails and up over the cliffs. In the mirror, Josiah had a perfect view of what they would be facing, which, indeed, suddenly seemed a far more formidable place.

“We’re being targeted.” One of the gunmen suddenly announced. “Snipers!”

Josiah held up Hope Rising, and with a flash, his shield appeared over their head.

Ping!

A bullet struck the shield and bounced off, flashing off through the woods. Josiah stared up, trying to see where it had come from. A few more shots were fired as well, but with the flashes that went off every time a bullet hit home, Josiah couldn’t tell exactly where they were coming from.

“Is there any way you can give me cover for just a second?” One of the gunmen, a taller man, spoke up. “If I can make it back into the trees, I can take cover and start shooting back.”

“And I can assist as well, once we’ve done proper reconnaissance.” Sara murmured. Her eyes were glued to the image on the mirror, which Josiah rather wanted to watch as well. “Just a few more minutes.”

Several more shots hit the shield, and Josiah nodded.

“Cover your eyes, be ready to move.” The man quickly did as he was told. They all did, and Josiah gripped his sword a bit tighter.

“Overturn Guardian’s Resolve.”

A brilliant flash of light exploded all around them, lighting up the area like the sun. The sniper shots paused, and the hunters, two of them, broke for the trees. They were under cover an instant later, and Josiah raised the shield once more.
