LIVELY COLOR MAKES SHADOWS INTERESTING

The road or leaf-strewn flat plane in the foreground consists primarily of shades of beige and orange. The shadowed areas are painted in oranges, browns and subtle touches of blue. The shadow color is strongest closest to the light and becomes more muted as it moves away from the light source. The shadows in the foliage are darker foliage colors mixed with blues.

AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE

Shadows aren't always blue or purple, but the color of a shadow is determined by the color of the object onto which it is cast. The color of the road is a lavender-gray, which gets lighter in value as it's touched by strong sunlight. Where the sun blocks the light and creates shadows crossing the road, the lavender-gray becomes darker and picks up a little blue from the reflection of the sky. The color of the shadow changes where it crosses foliage on the sides of the road, becoming darker values of the colors of the grasses or bushes.
