Later, after they all cleaned up the dinner dishes, Russel said, âLetâs go milk the cows and goats. I did that kind of early this morning, so theyâre probably already full again, but what do I know?â
They milked the three cows and the goats. Sure enough, the cats showed up for their treat. âThat oneâs Amber,â Fayth said as she squirted goatâs milk into a silver bowl on a low stool beneath her goat. âThat one is Maggie, and the last one isâ¦â Fayth looked at Russel. âTheyâre all girls?â
âYep, theyâre all spayed, and Iâve seen no stray males prowling around,â Russel told her.
âHmm. The third one needs a good name, too.â Fayth placed the bowl with the warm milk on the floor, and all three cats lapped it. âAmber, Maggie, and the brown one. Hmm, what name should she have?â
âThat cat is a rascal. She claws everything and tears up her bedding,â Russel said.
âOkay, Iâll name her Teri with one r and an i. Amber, Maggie, and Teri.â
âOkay. I hope I remember which one is which. So, itâs Maggie, Amber, and Teri. Theyâre our Cat Patrol.â Russel stood up and stretched his back. Shayla was finishing up the last cow.
âWhat do we do with this milk?â Fayth asked.
âWe save a gallon for us and spill the rest in the ditch after we separate the cream for Cathy and our coffee.â
âWhat? Why?â
âWho are we going to give it to? William and Cathy already have too much milk. I think they dump most of what they harvest. We donât know anyone to give it to and donât want to make any more friends.â
Fayth looked at the three cats near her feet. She reached down and rubbed Amberâs back. âNothing makes sense anymore. Too bad we didnât give some to Charly and her friends.â
Russel gently took hold of Fayâs hand. âLook, kid. The thing is, we donât want others to know what we have. We need to remain off the radar and look like we have very little when we meet others. Never brag or reveal what we have. We hope someday things will get better and we can share our milk. Milk cows and egg-laying chickens are worth more than their weight in gold.â
âI was afraid to use the shower, sink, or toilet upstairs. Do they all work?â
âYes, the water is warm. But the water pressure is only half of what it used to be. I turned down the gas water heater to its minimum level,â Russel said.
âMaybe tomorrow we can go to the swimming hole?â Fayth asked.
âWe can fit that in after all the chores. If tomorrow is like today, itâll be nice to swim. I donât let the cattle back there because theyâd all be walking in there pooping and stuff, ruining the beach. Right now, the water is almost clean enough to drink.â
âI want to see this place and wear my new suit.â
âI have suntan lotion!â Shayla added.

They all watched Groundhog Day together on the laptop with popcorn and soda that night.
