Chapter Nine
Over the next few weeks, Jonty couldnât recall ever being happier, even before the horror of losing his family. He had jumped at the chance to buy the lighthouse and the deal progressed quickly. He had great fun planning all the changes he wanted to make. He had commissioned Jed to make bespoke display units and shelving for the gallery area, agreeing to a price that Jonty knew was too low but Jed wouldnât budge on. Cliff House had sold to a local family with four children, with Jed instrumental in agreeing a deal they could afford. It hadnât even gone on the market so Jonty hadnât had to worry about showing people around. Heâd already moved out everything he needed and just went back there to paint, something that he was doing more and more. His nights were spent at Jedâs place. He was becoming known around the village as he sat on the quay sketching and, though still shy about talking to people, he no longer ran away when they approached. Heâd also started volunteering at the lifeboat station and was painting a set of watercolors, featuring the boat and crew, to turn into new postcards for the kiosk there.
With three weeks to go before the auction, he had yet to finish his own offering, hence his current position with a sketchpad on his knees observing the lifeboat crew as they trained. Of course he wasnât getting a lot done because Jed in his RNLI uniform was far too distracting.
Jonty gave Marmite a scratch behind the ears. âHeâll be done soon, boy. I promise.â At his feet, Marmite rolled onto his back, demanding a belly rub. Jonty got to his knees to oblige, digging his fingers into Marmiteâs soft fur. âYou are such an attention seeker,â Jonty murmured.
âItâs taken you a while to work that one out, and I have to say, you look spectacular on your knees.â
âJed!â Jonty scrambled to his feet. âAre you all finished?â
âWe are. How did your sketching go? Can I see?â
Jonty bit his lip but handed over his pad. Jed flicked through the pages, his grin widening. âYou seem to be obsessed with one particular subject.â
âWell, itâs especially inspiring.â Jontyâs cheeks heated. Every sketch heâd done was of Jed. The man did have a body worthy of art after all. âTheyâd be even better if you were naked,â he whispered.
âIt sounds to me like someone needs my personal attention. Time to go home.â
Jonty gathered his things, shoving pencils and paper into his satchel as quickly as he could. Marmite caught the mood and headed for home at a rapid trot.
âI would like to draw you some time if youâd let meâ¦I mean, you knowâ¦â
âWithout my clothes on.â Jed gave him the kind of smile that made Jontyâs knees shake. He nodded his head so fast his vision blurred. âOkay.â
âDid you just say I couldâ¦?â
âSure. Why not? It could be fun, especially if you draw naked and I put you in chastity first.â
Jonty gulped.
