The knock on her front door jarred her awake. A glance at the clock made her gasp. She had slept for over two hours. She hurried to the door and found Chet holding a huge burgundy chrysanthemum in a copper planter with Willy at his side, the dogâs tail wagging in quick arcs.
âNorma,â he said, extending the plant. âIâm so sorry for missing our dinner last night. Neva said she saw you this morning and told you about my medical drama. I came to beg your forgiveness and see if I could treat you to dinner tonight.â
She smiled and took the plant from him. âThat is gorgeous. Thank you. I think itâs perfect for my porch.â She set it next to a painted bench she often sat on during the evenings. She motioned Chet inside the house, noticing how his crisp blue shirt brought out his eyes. When he passed by her, the scent of sandalwood and lemon tickled her nose. He smelled incredible.
She led him and Willy to the living room. âMay I offer you something to drink?â
He held up his hand. âIâm fine for now. I was going to call and thought Iâd rather face you in person and ask your forgiveness. My absence was unavoidable, and once at the hospital, it was chaotic.â
âAll is forgiven. I trust youâre feeling better?â She moved the blanket she had been using to the arm of her chair and could only hope her hair didnât look like sheâd been sleeping for the last two hours.
He nodded. âI was incredibly dizzy yesterday afternoon, my heart was beating really fast, and I just felt odd. I probably should have just rested, but Henry and Neva thought it best to get checked out. Poor Henry ended up staying there with me all night long.â He sighed. âAnyway, it ended up being related to my blood pressure medication. The doctor recommended a change and also said I was dehydrated, so they hooked me up to a drip, ran all their tests, waited for all the consultations, and finally let me go early this morning.â
âWell, thatâs good news, at least.â
âIâve been sleeping since we got back here and hope poor old Henry recovers. I felt horrible having him drive me, but he insisted.â
âOh, heâs a very kind person. Iâm sure he didnât mind. Itâs what we do around here.â
âI feel awful about last night. I planned to call you and then realized I didnât have your number. Henry wasnât in the room with me, so I couldnât ask him, and then I remembered you hadnât told anyone here about our past connection and I didnât want to do anything to upset you. Anyway, it was a mess.â
âPlease donât worry. Iâm just glad youâre okay.â Norma rose from her chair and made her way to the kitchen, returning with a fresh cup of tea and a large glass of water for Chet. âDrink up. It sounds like you need to drink more water.â
He smiled. âYes, maâam.â
