Chapter Twenty-Four
Spring in Davis didnât disappointâseventy degrees and sunny. Riding alongside Paige was no disappointment either. Fortunately, she didnât have to pay attention to where they were going. With Paige leading, she let herself relax and enjoy things like the way Paige kept looking in her direction. Along with the sexy way Paigeâs forearm muscles tensed and shifted as she gripped the handlebars.
âFirst stopâthe bookstore. Because any town with an independent bookstore is automatically cool.â Paige parked her bike and pulled out a chain lock. âI didnât get you a bike lock. Weâll have to chain ours together.â
Seren sidled her cruiser up to Paigeâs, not at all upset to watch her new bike get chained to Paigeâs. Paige tugged off her helmet. âReady?â
Browsing with Paige was nice. They chatted about books and Seren almost decided on picking up the newest N.K. Jemisin novel when Paige held up an âI Heart Davisâ magnet. With a wink, she headed to the checkout counter. As soon as they stepped out of the store, she handed the bag with the magnet to Seren.
âWhat am I going to do with a Davis magnet?â
âBy the end of today, youâre gonna want to put that on your fridge where you can see it all the time.â Paige grinned. âNext stop, the Co-op. It might not be exactly cool, but they make good sandwiches.â
Seren rocked her head side to side. âI donât know. I think the Co-op is kind of coolâin an overpriced, patchouli-scented vegan hipster kind of way.â
Coolness was hard to measure, Seren decided, as they walked down the aisles of the Co-op. Maybe Davis was cooler than she gave it credit for. When sheâd moved away for college, her impressions of the town were all tied with being an unhappy teenager who hadnât really found her way in the world. Sure, she had her music, but aside from Leslie she didnât have friends. And unlike Leslie, whoâd bopped from boyfriend to boyfriend throughout high school, she hadnât dated.
After college sheâd spent so much energy bashing the town, and avoiding coming back, that she hadnât really considered the good parts. Then when she had finally come back, of course, everything had gotten worse in her life. Until, well, recently.
âYou okay?â
Without realizing it, sheâd stopped walking. Paige studied her from across a display of strawberries.
âIâm good.â She held up the wrapped sandwiches theyâd selected from the deli counter. âFantasizing about eating these.â
Paige squinted at her. âThat was your happy fantasizing face?â
âNot exactly. Was I making a weird expression?â
Paige bit the edge of her lip. âA little, yeah. But Iâm not going to push it if you donât want to say what you were thinking. Strawberries?â
Seren dropped her chin. âI donât want you to think Iâm some big-city snob because I donât like Davis.â
Paige didnât respond, clearly waiting for her to go on. She took a deep breath and let it out slow, glancing around at the produce. Her gaze settled on the avocados, all stacked up in a perfect green pyramid.
