Chapter Nineteen

Something was wrong with me. Ana had only been living with me for a few days, but already I found it difficult to imagine her anywhere else but under my roof. The possessive feeling was unwelcome and uncomfortable.

Though it was Saturday- technically a day of play per our contract- I’d retreated to my home office under the guise I needed to finish some work. It wasn’t untrue. There was always work awaiting my attention, but today I needed the additional space to get my head on straight.

My phone vibrated across the desk next to my laptop, and I looked over to see that it was one of the few people I considered a friend- Luna Rivera. Glancing at the clock, I realized I’d forgotten to call her for our usual weekend chat.

“Good morning, Luna,” I greeted when I tapped the phone screen to answer.

“Oh, good, you’re still alive.” She giggled. “I almost worried about you since you didn’t call.”

“I’ve been busy,” I apologized, or the closest I was getting to one.

“That’s what I’ve heard,” her voice was imbued with suggestion, and I sighed.

“What exactly have you heard?” I asked, almost afraid of the answer. Luna’s sister-in-law was one of Ana’s close friends and the fiancée of my business partner, Chase.

“I hear you’ve got a woman living with you,” Luna teased. “That’s pretty juicy gossip. Nolan West with a girlfriend.”

“Ana isn’t my girlfriend,” I protested, running a hand down my face. This was one of the reasons I didn’t have female friends.

“Oh, so just a fuck buddy, then?”

“Don’t talk about her like that,” I snapped at Luna.

“There it is,” she gloated, and my brow furrowed in confusion. “I knew it was something more! Are you in love with her?”

“What?” I blurted, taken aback by the question. “Hell, no. What is wrong with you today? Where is my logical, refined, mellow friend? What have you done with her?”

“Oh, stop, I’m just having a little fun,” Luna laughed. “I’ll leave your relationship alone- for now. I have my own news, anyway.”

“Well.” I paused, but she didn’t speak. “Go on.”

“I’m pregnant.” Luna’s words projected the smile I was sure she was wearing across the line. She and her husband, Julian, had struggled to have children and had recently turned to fertility treatments to aid them.

“Congratulations to you both,” I said, genuinely happy for her. “Everything is okay so far?”

“Yes, the little blob- I mean, baby- looks good according to the doctor,” she told me. “We just had our first ultrasound yesterday to confirm things.”

“I hope all goes well for you.”

“Me, too.” The vulnerability in Luna’s voice made my chest tighten. I knew she’d been afraid she would never carry a baby for Julian, and though I was certain her husband didn’t hang his love on her ability as a broodmare, it didn’t help to tell her that.

“You know,” she added, a hint of amusement in her voice. “It’s not too late for you to settle down and start your own family.”

Fuck, no. I couldn’t say that to my pregnant friend and risk ruining her happiness.
