Gunner had provided Caleb with the name of a contractor friend, and then Caleb had pushed his dad to ask around for a second one so he could get a rough idea of non-cosmetic problems that required fixing and general improvement ideas.

In the end, he told Brad that when the time came, he wanted to work with the Gunner’s contractor friend, Ryan, simply because the guy had been in awe of the farmhouse, pointing out all the parts that made it a “gem.” Contractor’s words, not Caleb’s. Personally, he understood why Brad wasn’t terribly thrilled about living in the house; it was hard enough to move but to move into a house that still had someone else’s stuff in it would be mentally exhausting. At least the house wasn’t falling apart, even if it was old. Ryan had also sworn it would take a tornado to make it crumble.

Totally reassuring words when you could look out from the second-floor balcony and see miles and miles of flat land just begging for a high pressure atmospheric system to clash with a cool front. Charming, no?

Ryan’s excitement about the pub though…that was partly what sealed the deal. Maybe that was ridiculous, but Caleb couldn’t help it. If he had any chance of redeeming himself—even if it was only in his own eyes—then he needed a contractor who felt the same excitement he did.

“That Finley payin’ you for all this?” his dad asked.

They were both sitting on the couch, eating chicken Alfredo, one of the few things Caleb knew how to cook well. His mom was on the night shift at the hospital. He swallowed his bite and replied, “Yes and no. We sorta worked out a deal.” He took his time explaining in between bites, concluding with, “Ryan, the contractor, got pretty excited about the big picture of the house and building a wedding venue. We’re starting with Outskirts so we all have time to design the venue and let Brad figure out what he wants with the farmhouse.”

“It’s been a while since you’ve been this excited about anything,” his dad remarked, setting his dish on the coffee table. He reclined back and studied Caleb. “I can’t think of the last time I heard you sound this happy.”

Caleb frowned. “I’ve been happy.”

His dad shook his head. “Not like this. I think the last time I heard you sound this way, it was when you were dating that Rick and still in your internship.”

Sighing dramatically, Caleb dropped his head on the back of the couch and looked at the ceiling. “That was a good time. I was still young and naïve and still thought I would be the king of launching start-ups. And Rick and I were still in the honeymoon phase of early dating. Such good times.”

His dad kicked his leg. “You liked trying to make those start-ups work.”

The ceiling looked interesting. “I did. But they didn’t work out. Three different failed start-ups. Obviously, something was wrong, and I was the common denominator.
