Out on the south Cassia County hills, in the land claimed as grazing territory by the cattlemen, where the sheepmen grazed their flocks and visitors were few, the sight of a new face was welcome, even though some new faces meant trouble.

Not long past daybreak on the morning of February 4, 1886, two young Mormon sheep tenders, Daniel Cummings and John Wilson, saw a horseman riding their way. Although they were in the middle of fixing breakfast, they were glad to see him. He was Davis Hunter, another sheepman whose flock was also located in the no man’s land, a few miles to the west. He was pulling a two-wheeled cart, and unloaded for Cummings and Wilson a small stack of firewood he had chopped. He and the cart were headed to the small town of Oakley, about thirty miles away, to pick up supplies.

All seemed well at the camp. The sheep were nearby, under close observation, close enough that the two sheepdogs were still tied to a wheel of their wagon, not yet needed to rein in the stragglers. The camp was neatly kept, and supplies were adequate. Their wagon, a supply carrier that doubled as a makeshift bunkhouse under a canvas cover, was in good shape.

As he rode off, Hunter was pleased to see things going so well, especially in a time of tension and some risk from the cattlemen. For the sheepmen had all been warned: Work this territory at the risk of death. All of the sheepmen were armed for protection from predators; but now the wolves and coyotes were the least of their fears.

And no one had warned them more often than a talkative, tough man named “Diamondfield” Jack Davis, a gunman for the Sparks-Harrell ranch, which stretched from Cassia County, Idaho, deep into Nevada. Of all the cattlemen and all their hired guns, Davis was the man they feared the most. He had actually shot a man some months before, and word of his heinous reputation spread fast in Cassia County.
