CHAPTER TEN
LEIF HAD NO idea how much time passed as he’d knelt next to the mer he’d killed with the car, but the sound of police sirens was enough to pull him out of his sullen mood. He had to escape. But he couldn’t leave Draven and Beatrice for the cops.
He was in unfamiliar territory, and had no idea which direction was which, but he first ran to Beatrice who was still lying on the concrete. As he knelt down next to her, he found her chest rising and falling, and relief flooded him. While he still blamed her for a lot of what happened to him in the past, she had saved his life from the hunters, and he felt like he owed her the same thing. Placing his hands under her arms, he hoisted her up and onto his shoulder. There, she hung limply and Leif kept one hand on her back to keep her steady.
He nearly dropped her as someone clapped him on the back.
“I knew you’d come through,” Draven said, squeezing his free shoulder. Leif looked at the soaked vampire leader and saw that he was looking at Florian’s overturned car. Draven whistled. “Something tells me you didn’t drive into them.”
Sirens were getting louder.
“We’ve got to move,” Leif said, not wanting to talk about the details of his killing. Taking a long stride, he began moving toward an outcropping of trees to the north. That would, at the very least, give them some cover.
“Good thinking,” Draven said, keeping pace with him. “We don’t want to be here when the cops arrive.” The vampire leader looked at his watch, then wrung his wrist back and forth. “Despicable mer — they broke my Tag Heuer.”
Leif ignored Draven’s complaint, but figured Tag Heuer was a brand of watch — likely an expensive one.
“Once we get clear of unfriendly eyes, we should find lodging,” Draven continued. “I’m not sure how close we are to sunrise, but we do not want to be stuck out here when dawn arrives.”
Speak for yourself, Leif thought.
Before long, they were beyond the sidewalk and were running to what looked to be a ditch with a small creek running toward the bay. Leif scaled down the ditch with ease, balancing Beatrice’s small form. His feet splashed through the thin creek, kicking up mud behind him, then climbed back up and into the protection of the outcropping of trees.
As he came to a stop, he slowly moved Beatrice into a cradle-hold and found her gazing up at him with her brown eyes aglow and a warm smile spread across her face.
“Do you know how long I’ve waited to be held by you again?” she said.
Leif sighed, rolling his eyes as he slowly brought her back down to her feet.
“And to think,” she added as she planted her feet, “all I had to do was drown.” She held onto Leif’s hand a moment longer, then stood on tiptoes and kissed him softly on the cheek. “Thanks for saving me.
