Chapter Eleven
Aidan gently swayed on the porch swing, taking in his surroundings. It was nothing comparable to the view from the old house, and the swing didnât seem to have the same enjoyable movement as previously. It no longer creaked or was positioned the correct distance from the ground. Being much shorter than Aidan and his male siblings, Heath had added links to the chain to lower it to accommodate his height and not theirs. Instead of the swing yielding a feeling of relaxation, it felt imposing. Christopheâs shag-carpeted floor had felt more inviting.
He sipped his coffee and scoffed. Decaf. Irene stirred in the kitchen while chatting on the phone with a church companion, boasting into the receiver that her professional hockey player son had come for a visit. But that was as far as the enjoyment went for both of them. Her pleasure appeared more related to his profession than his visit, and his dissatisfaction grew as she paired him on a blind date with the daughter of her friend. She, his matchmaking mom, wanted him to find happiness with a partner, but she also didnât want him hanging around her home and invading her time with her husband.
And maybe that was how it should be, that at a certain age, a mother was satisfied with a monthly call from her children and no more. Or perhaps, looking at him raised memories of his father. Regardless, he didnât need his mother peddling him off like a flea market bargain. She had plenty of other offspring to give her grandkids to bounce her on knee and make faces at.
Marianna, he heard his mother say, and he cringed. Heâd attended school with Marianna Herbert and recalled her vaguelyâmainly that she had been a year below him, popular (especially among male students), and been voted âbest tits.â Aidan had never asked her out, because heâd found her laugh annoying and her friends obnoxious. Over the years, she may have obtained new friends, but he doubted sheâd acquired a new laugh.
Irene tapped on the window and asked if he was available for lunch. He easily could have said he had plans and called an old chum for an afternoon of billiards, bowling, or beer at the pub, but decided a lunch date may change his perspective. He nodded, and knew by Ireneâs expression she was pleased and shocked by his unobjecting compliance.
