Chapter 10: A Review of ‘It Happened Here’: A Portrayal of German Occupation of Britain

Counterfactual movies, even counterfactual television series are not that common. There is a challenge even with well-known events such as the Second World War in providing sufficient information so that the audience can quickly understand what is different in the story from what actually happened, without long periods of explanation which begin to sound too much like a lecture. This challenge was encountered with the movie ‘Fatherland’ (1994) based on the best-selling novel of the same name, written by Robert Harris and published in 1992. It is described as a ‘TV movie’. The movie is a thriller set in a Germany of the 1960s in which the Germans won the Second World War and the country is in a state of cold war with the USA. The reason why it did not receive general distribution was because when shown to test cinema audiences in the USA, it was found that they did not ‘get’ what the movie was about. This is a challenge with thrillers anyway, but the added confusion was that many of the audience did not understand the difference between the Cold War with the USSR that held Eastern Europe, including part of Berlin, under its control and the dour, paranoid society shown for the enduring Nazi regime. There are plans, however, by German movie company UFA to produce another version.
