Chapter Nine

Holly’s first impression was black leather from head to toe, along with black hair and a black beard just beginning to show some white in it.

The man wrapped one large arm around Lorna and pulled her close. “Did you miss me so much, doll, that ye greet me at the door?” He leaned in to give her a kiss, but Lorna put both her hands on his chest.

“Harris, we have company.” She turned her head and his lips met her cheek. A soft rosy hue ran from her neck all the way up her face to her hairline.

“What’s this?” He lifted his head and looked at them. “On Christmas Eve? That’s supposed to wait ‘till Hogmanay.” He laughed before stepping around his wife. “I guess our luck will start early this year.” He strode toward them and Ethan rose.

“I’m Ethan Stewart.” Ethan laid his hand on her shoulder. “And this is Holly Douglas.”

The big man halted and looked back at Lorna who had just closed the door. She nodded. “Aye, that Holly Douglas.”

Holly stood as well because looking at the big man from a sitting position was hard on her neck. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Harris looked at her as if trying to make what knowledge he had of her fit her appearance. “Yer bonnier than I expected.”

She let out a relieved breath. “Thank you.”

Lorna pushed Harris with her hip. “Stop gawking at her and go drop your leathers. We have to leave soon.”

The big man grinned at her before exiting the room to change.

Lorna shook her head. “He can be a bit intimidating, but he has a heart of gold.”

Holly was sure she’d missed something. “Your dad approves of Harris?” Certainly, a man who rode a motorcycle would have to be considered in the living-life-on-the-edge category. Cam had a bike for a couple of years, but when he totalled it, she’d convinced him they couldn’t afford another. She’d been so shaken up, she’d have said anything to keep him from owning another one.

Lorna waved off her comment. “After what happened to William, me Dad really couldn’t say much, and he saw how well Harris took care of me. Still, I don’t like to remind him that Harris likes to ride or that I go with him.”

She moved forward and picked up the forgotten tea tray. “Honestly, I think me father would have approved of anyone who pulled me out of the dark hole I went down after William passed.” She shook her head. “I’ll be right back.”

With that, Cam’s sister left them alone.

Holly was familiar with that dark hole. At Christmas, she often forgot she was still trying to climb out of that hole because Cam visited, but what would she do next Christmas?

Ethan crossed the room to the window. “That’s a big bike.” He looked back at her and gave her a smile. “For a big man.”

She gladly left the path her thoughts had gone down. “Don’t tell me you like to ride, too?”

He shrugged. “I rode when I was young before I even met Cameron or Brody.
