Chapter 19

DAY TWO – SATURDAY

NORMALLY AN EARLY RISER, Kate woke up at her regular time. It took her a brief moment to realize where she was. It was freezing cold. She and Lee were pressed together, back to back. Deep, even breathing indicated that Lee was still asleep. She’s a quiet sleeper. None of that racket Max used to make. She hadn’t thought about Max for...how long? Well, a long time. She’d been gone five years—only about three years less then they’d been together.

It felt strange being in bed with another woman, a darned attractive woman at that. She wondered what Lee’s reaction would be if she knew that she’d spent the night in bed with a lesbian. Since Max’s departure, Kate had made it a point to never hide or deny her sexual identity although she still didn’t advertise it either. The only subtle public acknowledgement of her sexuality came in the form of the necklace she wore that Kyle had given her for her birthday the year he opened his own practice. It was a small gold pendant with her initials on one side and the number ‘1138’ engraved on the other side. When she questioned the significance of the number he explained, “It’s purported to be the number of rights the federal government denies us by prohibiting same sex marriage. It is something we all need to remember and fight to overcome.”

Kate glanced at the clock on the dresser. Ten past five. Setting an alarm was something Kate rarely had to do. She seemed to naturally wake up between five and five-thirty every morning. I’d better get up and check the fire. Hopefully there are enough coals left I won’t have to start another one from scratch. Kate exhaled a long sigh.

“You awake?” Lee whispered in a hushed tone.

The question startled Kate. She moved away and turned onto her back. Lee did the same.

“Yes, sorry.” Kate said referring to the close and intimate position they were in when they had awakened. “I guess we were both cold.”

“Yes. And Cody abandoned us.”

“I think we probably edged him out.” Kate raised her head. “He’s at the bottom of the bed.”

Hearing his name mentioned was enough to cause Cody to jump up. He walked across each of them seeking attention and affection.

“Ooooh, Cody. How many times have I, your special person, tried to teach you to not step on my bladder in the morning?”

Lee laughed. “Man, it’s cold in here.”

“I’ve been debating about getting up to put some wood on the fire but didn’t want to wake you. It’s probably tropical up here, compared to downstairs. Heat rises.”

“The wind is still blowing.” Lee looked towards the window. “Wonder how much snow we got. There was at least a foot last night when we went out to get the wood. It’s still too dark to see.”

“I’ll check it when I let Cody out and let you know.” Kate shivered as she tossed the blankets back. “Brr! Well, shall we brave the
