Lennon read the words twice, sitting on the edge of the bed, trying to make sense of it all. She held the note for a second and then let it drop to her lap. Resting her elbows on her knees, she dropped her head into her hands. If she wanted it, she had an easy out. All she had to do was speak the wordsâsay that she couldnât deal with this level of chaos, with pushing away help out of sheer stubbornness.
Picking up the note, she crumpled it. âAnother one bites the dust.â She tossed the balled-up piece of paper toward her open closet. She tried to feign anger, but instead she felt the sting of rejection.
Balling her fists, she stood. She took a ragged breath. She had sworn she wasnât going to fall again and that she wasnât going to be weakened. That was her original plan, a good plan, and she was sticking to it.
With a scowl on her face, she threw open her bedroom door and strolled to the kitchen. She could opt not to call, or she could have a chat face-to-face. Either way, she certainly didnât have to decide before breakfast.
âGood morning,â Grant called out from the kitchen. âI figured last night might have been a bit rough, so I took the liberty of making you a decent breakfast to start today out better than yesterday ended.â
âThank you,â she said, wanting nothing more than to collapse into his arms and let his tall frame support her for a moment. Instead, she walked to the coffeepot, pouring a cup of determination.
âMy pleasure,â he said, flipping a pancake with the spatula in his hand. âBy the wayââhe turned to face herââwhat did happen when you got her here?â
âYou donât want to know,â she said, taking a sip of her coffee. âTrust me.â She shuddered. âI donât even want to know what happened in there, and I lived most of it.â
âMost of it?â
She let out a sad laugh. âI fell asleep somewhere in the mix of it all. She was gone when I woke up.â
âI heard her leave this morning around six,â he said. He set a plate down at the table. âForget about it, and eat for now.â
As she stuck her fork into the stack of pancakes, she smiled at him. âThank you,â she said again. âThis is just what I needed.â
He laughed. âDisaster relief should always include pancakes.â He poured himself a glass of orange juice and took a long drink before coming to sit at the table with her. âAnd by the way, just because your lord and savior Lady Gaga sings about a bad romance, it doesnât mean you have to live one. Remember that.â
He took a bite of pancake. After he swallowed, he leveled his gaze at her. âBut thatâs also coming from a bitter old queen whoâs still single. So take it with a grain of salt. Above all, you take care of you. I donât want you getting hurt while trying to take care of someone else.
