Lennon read the words twice, sitting on the edge of the bed, trying to make sense of it all. She held the note for a second and then let it drop to her lap. Resting her elbows on her knees, she dropped her head into her hands. If she wanted it, she had an easy out. All she had to do was speak the words—say that she couldn’t deal with this level of chaos, with pushing away help out of sheer stubbornness.

Picking up the note, she crumpled it. “Another one bites the dust.” She tossed the balled-up piece of paper toward her open closet. She tried to feign anger, but instead she felt the sting of rejection.

Balling her fists, she stood. She took a ragged breath. She had sworn she wasn’t going to fall again and that she wasn’t going to be weakened. That was her original plan, a good plan, and she was sticking to it.

With a scowl on her face, she threw open her bedroom door and strolled to the kitchen. She could opt not to call, or she could have a chat face-to-face. Either way, she certainly didn’t have to decide before breakfast.

“Good morning,” Grant called out from the kitchen. “I figured last night might have been a bit rough, so I took the liberty of making you a decent breakfast to start today out better than yesterday ended.”

“Thank you,” she said, wanting nothing more than to collapse into his arms and let his tall frame support her for a moment. Instead, she walked to the coffeepot, pouring a cup of determination.

“My pleasure,” he said, flipping a pancake with the spatula in his hand. “By the way”—he turned to face her—“what did happen when you got her here?”

“You don’t want to know,” she said, taking a sip of her coffee. “Trust me.” She shuddered. “I don’t even want to know what happened in there, and I lived most of it.”

“Most of it?”

She let out a sad laugh. “I fell asleep somewhere in the mix of it all. She was gone when I woke up.”

“I heard her leave this morning around six,” he said. He set a plate down at the table. “Forget about it, and eat for now.”

As she stuck her fork into the stack of pancakes, she smiled at him. “Thank you,” she said again. “This is just what I needed.”

He laughed. “Disaster relief should always include pancakes.” He poured himself a glass of orange juice and took a long drink before coming to sit at the table with her. “And by the way, just because your lord and savior Lady Gaga sings about a bad romance, it doesn’t mean you have to live one. Remember that.”

He took a bite of pancake. After he swallowed, he leveled his gaze at her. “But that’s also coming from a bitter old queen who’s still single. So take it with a grain of salt. Above all, you take care of you. I don’t want you getting hurt while trying to take care of someone else.
