What mattered was getting the twins to safety and reassessing our approach, as clearly whatever they had set out to do was not successful in convincing their father that there was no Inferno Illusion, or whatever he wanted to assume it was.

I could only imagine the dejection and heartbreak that Kristen and Matt felt. Without wasting time, we gathered their research, climbed the stairs, and wandered back through the winding hallways. Everyone was quiet, even Eric, for once. There was no rush to get back to the Leviathan either. Icebringer wasn’t going to come for us, of that I was certain. He didn’t want to cause his children any more harm than he already had, but I was pretty sure the damage was done. It would take more than a little groveling to get back in the twins’ good graces, even if he was their father.

No one questioned the odd replicated room of their old home, or why there were mostly empty rooms and so many winding hallways. I doubted that the twins really had any answers, anyway. I did wish that we’d had the foresight to leave ourselves a breadcrumb trail or something so that we didn’t get lost. Going through this maze once was hard enough, but doing it backward was somehow even more puzzling.

“Not that way,” Matt said stiffly as Eric moved to turn left at the fork in the hallways. He looked like he was about to ask how he knew, but I cut him off by pointing to my nose. Matt could sniff out the right direction with his wolf senses, which was handy. I wondered what scent he was picking up on that was leading him through the labyrinth.

Before long, we were back at the giant murder shrine that was dedicated to my old man. It still made me ill to see it, and judging by Kristen and Matt’s shamed faces, it didn’t sit well with them, either.

“Did you see this while you were here?” Gemma asked them softly, clearly trying to handle this situation with kid gloves.

They had no words, only able to shake their heads collectively as they stared at the floor. Clearly, they had already seen enough.

“I’m sorry.” I frowned and gently put my arm around Kristen’s waist, holding her tightly enough for her to know that I was here for her if she needed me and loosely enough to give her the space that she wanted. I knew first-hand the anguish of having my father break my heart, and I recalled not wanting anyone to talk to me or touch me for days. Eventually, I came around, but during that time immediately after being taken from Inferno Island, I needed to sort things out on my own.

Unsurprisingly, Kristen didn’t verbally answer me, but she did lean into me a little more. I took it as a sign that she appreciated the gesture, but she wasn’t ready to talk about anything just yet. That was fine with me.

Through more twisty halls
