Chapter 9

Gabriel awoke with his head in Ian’s lap. They sat on the couch, sunlight streaming through the large window behind them.

“Where’s Grey?” Gabriel’s heart beat hard in his chest as he recalled the events of the previous night. There’d been an intruder alert, and Grey had gone to investigate before he and Ian had had a chance to give Gabriel their mating bites.

“He’s in bed asleep.” Ian stood and stretched.

“Why are we in here?” Gabriel asked. He remembered they’d been sitting up, awaiting the alpha’s return.

“You fell asleep, and I didn’t want to disturb you. Don’t worry, I was pretty comfortable, or I would have had Grey pick you up.”

Gabriel blushed at having slept with his head pillowed on Ian’s lap all night. He’d been pretty scared, and the beta’s presence had soothed him.

“Did they catch whoever it was?”

“No.” Ian opened the door to the terrace, letting in the crisp autumn air. “Grey said they couldn’t find a trace of scent. They think perhaps it was a rogue trying to steal some food.”

Gabriel was surprised his mates had held a conversation without it awakening him. He really must have been out of it.

“If someone was that hungry, wouldn’t we give them something to eat?” he asked, covertly adjusting himself in his pants. He’d like to think it was morning wood, but he knew better; he found the thought of Grey and Ian observing him in sleep oddly arousing.

Ian shrugged. “Maybe they were too scared. The guards scented werewolf, but that’s all they know.”

Gabriel stood. “I’ll cook us some breakfast.” He’d taken to cooking most of the meals they had at home. He enjoyed it, and it made him feel like he was contributing.

“Would you put some coffee on first?”

“Of course.”

Ian disappeared into the bathroom, and Gabriel set about making the coffee. He’d been really worried about Grey the night before. He hadn’t realized he’d become so attached to the alpha. It was easy to love warm, calm, even-tempered Ian. In the past, Gabriel had labeled what he felt for Grey as pure physical attraction. But the night before, when Grey had charged out of the house at the sound of the guard’s howl, the omega had been filled with a terror that spoke of something deeper than lust.

In spite of what Grey and Ian had said about why they’d held off biting him so far, Gabriel couldn’t shake the feeling of being a third wheel. The sex was good—more than good. Both Ian and Grey payed plenty of attention to Gabriel in bed. But did they love him as they loved one another? They’d had years together, and it showed in every touch and look that passed between the two. Gabriel was just the omega—the one they’d taken to bear them children. They had to fuck him in order to do that. Sure, he wasn’t in heat, but all werewolves knew it was important to copulate as much as possible in order to stimulate fertility so when the heat did come on, the omega’s body would be ready and receptive to the sperm.
