Chapter 14

Liv

They hadn’t been found. The children had, eventually, given up looking for Honey and Liv, distracted from their game by the large blue birthday cake covered in sparklers rather than candles. Liv wasn’t going to complain, not only did they win the game, but she felt like she had gotten a wonderful prize. Gosh, did Honey know how to kiss. After what must have been at least a half hour they had managed to come apart long enough to decide how they were going to head back to the party, without arousing too much suspicion about their whereabouts and actions.

Liv rocked back on her heels and brushed the dirt from the knees of her jeans, praising herself a little for choosing black ones that morning. Honey however wasn’t so lucky, Liv chuckled at the dark marks on Honey’s bare knees. She ran her fingers gently over the marred skin as Honey stood upright and Liv felt her still at the touch of her hand. She thumbed at the dirt, her fingers fluttering lightly against the backs of Honey’s knees, just below the hem of her sundress.

“Oh!” a breathy whimper fell from Honey’s mouth at the contact.

When Liv looked up from her position, the sight she saw before her took her breath away. This was an angle she definitely wouldn’t mind viewing Honey from, over and over again. Her blonde curls cascaded over her shoulders that were rising and falling with each staggered intake of breath, her nostrils flaring slightly, a sure sign of how much she was affected by this.

Before she could stop herself Liv leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on each knee, the weight of Honey’s hands rested on her shoulders in an attempt to steady herself. Liv couldn’t help but think about how right this all felt. How nothing about the woman above her felt unfamiliar. Honey Rosenberg was a book Liv had read before, although she couldn’t remember when exactly. She was a story Liv knew with every fiber of her being, and with each touch, Liv felt the long forgotten words being revealed.

“We should go sing…eat cake,” Honey breathed and Liv nodded, standing up straight and brushing herself off once more.

As they began to emerge from their hiding space, Liv scanned the partygoers cautiously. She knew that all it would take would be one comment from an adult about something happening between her Honey and her face would give everything away. She was very expressive, or so she had always been told growing up. Her mother once told her it was a shame she never quite got into acting, despite taking musical theater classes as a child, because her expressions would have won her an Oscar. The problem was that despite Liv’s ability to run the gamut of emotions, she lacked the ability to disguise them. Once she felt them, they painted her face instantly and that often meant people knew exactly what she was thinking, good or bad. Like now, she mused, as Honey turned around to face her and reached out a hand for hers.
