“I KNOW I’M A SUSPICIOUS bastard,” Jack said as he squinted into the sunlight, watching the forklift carefully maneuver the sedated Hawn into the back of the semi parked on the grass. “But this feels off to me. Like, a lot.”

Yousef lifted a thick eyebrow as he helped Calloway haul the large reptile onto the bed of the truck. “Is he always like this?”

“Always,” Calloway and Kamala both confirmed.

“Lies,” Jack sniffed. “I’m a picture of sanity and trust, usually.”

“Well,” Calloway said as he looped a tether around the desert dragon’s neck and then padlocked it to one of the metal hooks sticking out from the wall. “To be fair, the way you described those two hillbillies, it did sound like your mother put the fear of God in them.”

“Despite their names, they’re godless heathens. Hence why I have this nagging feeling right about now. I don’t like this, man.”

Calloway dusted off his hands and hopped down from the truck, pouting slightly. “And here I thought you’d be happy to see me, Jackie Boy.”

“It’s been killing me,” Jack deadpanned. “I lay awake nights thinking about how much I miss you, Brucie.”

He laughed and shook his head. “Sarcastic bastard. Look, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Yousef’s authorized to drive anything with a steering wheel and I’ll be the lookout, and we’re mostly taking backroads to the airport to fly ole girl to Arizona. She’s out, so she won’t make a fuss. I even have a checkpoint during the ride to make sure she’s still sedated. It’s just an hour. Honestly, this is a walk in the park compared to some of our retrievals, as I’m sure Kam has told you by now.”

“He’s not wrong,” Richard said once he’d parked the forklift a few feet away and shut it off. “Those Bailey boys aren’t usually the type to take no for an answer. You ought to watch your six.”

Calloway shook his hand. “Thanks for the assist, Mr. Jackson, and trust me, we’ll watch our backs out here in these sticks. You got me missing smog and traffic. What’s all this clean air? Where’s I-285 and the Varsity?”

Richard chuckled. “You’ll be back soon enough, city boy.”

Calloway eyed Jack and stroked his goatee for a second. “You know, if you’re that worried about our girl, you could tag along.”

“Oh, no you don’t.” Jack held up both hands. “You’re not roping me into this again. Remember the part where I got shot the last time I helped retrieve a dragon? In the chest, I might add?”

“You were wearing body armor,” Calloway said, shrugging. “Big deal.”

“Have you ever been shot before?”

Calloway narrowed his eyes and replied in equal deadpan. “It’s because I’m black, isn’t it?”

Jack tried his best to stifle a laugh, but it still leaked out anyway. “Not my point. The idea was to draw the madness away from our kid, remember?”

His girlfriend gestured to the dragon inside of the eighteen-wheeler. “And we see how well that worked.”

Jack scowled. “Hey. I tried, dammit. This was all Dad’s fault.
