Chapter Eight

Helen went back to St Gervase’s Hospital a month later. She returned to yet another of those grimly small rooms which were all that they could spare for the nursing staff. There was the same hard little bed, and she thought with some horror that the patients dared complain ‒ and did! ‒ but she dared not.

She hung up her things in the meagre tall cupboard which would take four coat-hangers at the most (one hung two frocks on each one, with a prayer), and she spread out her uniform. Its familiarity suddenly gave her enthusiasm. The plan had been that when she came off duty she would be able to go home quite often. Miss Bryan had left her with the big car, but somehow she felt that so large a one would mean nothing to her really, and Margot helped her get rid of it quickly. In its place she bought a smaller car, an inconspicuous one (for Helen had no wish to show off, an amusement which had ever intrigued Miss Bryan), and this she could keep in a garage of which Margot knew, and she had her own chauffeur with it. He would be prepared to fetch her when she wished.

This was an enchanting arrangement, and she was supremely thankful that she had been guided by Margot to do it. Perhaps of all the things in life that she enjoyed most, far more than handsome jewels, and beautiful clothes, was the car which would do anything like that for her. Possibly having her own car (and one manageable and ready at any time) was the first realization which came to her of how much wealth could mean.

Next morning she presented herself at Matron’s office. She felt qualms outside the door, maybe everybody does and at all times, but when she got inside she was surprised that Matron could be quite so understanding. There was the prim desk, with everything spotlessly in order, for this happened automatically in hospital, as she knew, and Matron smiling there.

‘I think it is very brave of you to want to come back to us as you do,’ she said. ‘I appreciate your good offices tremendously, for at the moment we are extremely short-staffed. I gather that in the meantime you have inherited a legacy which is of considerable proportion.’

‘Yes, Matron, that is true.’

‘I should have thought that you would want to bask in the riches, and never return. Would it help you if I made it easy for you to relinquish your post?’

She was quite startled. ‘No, Matron, not at all, I want to come back. I happen to like nursing.’

Matron nodded. ‘I only said it with the idea of helping you. Life has changed so much, and you have had such a very unpleasant experience.’ She paused, then started again. ‘For the moment I thought it wiser to put you on theatre duty. Whilst the newspapers discuss you and your legacy, and being a survivor from the crash …’ She paused again.
