When Rachel stopped by the next morning, Jenny wouldnât let her in the cabin. âI donât want you catching it,â Jenny said. âEsther needs you. Any sign of her baby yet?â
Rachel shook her head. âThis oneâs taking its time.â
âDonât let Esther anywhere near here,â Jenny pleaded. âShe canât risk getting sick.â
âIâll bring hot food every day, soâs you donât have to cook,â Rachel said. âIâll leave the pot outside, and Mr. OâNeil can bring it in.â
Jennyâs days and nights ran together. A few days after William came down with the fever, he developed red spots on his face and hands. Then spots sprang up on his stomach and back. The spots turned to blisters, which filled and burst, then scabbed.
Jenny hadnât nursed anyone seriously ill since Mac had had cholera at Ash Hollow along the trail. Sheâd felt so alone tending him then, surrounded by others in their company ministering to their own invalids. Doc Tuller had been there, but he rushed from tent to tent caring for all the patients. The same was true now. Doc traveled from cabin to cabin looking after people with smallpox. He only came to see William every two or three days.
OâNeil insisted on relieving Jenny of much of Williamâs care. âThe boy likes me, Miz Jenny,â he said. âAnd you need your sleep.â He sent her up to the loft to rest, while he watched William during the nights. During the days, he did the chores, started the corn harvest, andâJenny hopedâcaught a few hoursâ sleep in the barn. The man seemed tireless.
âYouâre doing what you can, Jenny,â Doc Tuller told her during one visit. âThe boyâs fortunate. Not many pox on his face. Are you feeling all right?â
She nodded. âI donât seem to be getting sick.â
âAre you sleeping?â
âSome, thanks to Mr. OâNeil. He works all day and watches William at night.â
âAnd eating?â
Jenny nodded again. âRachel brings over dishes from Esther. And I keep a pot of soup on the fire.â
âThe boyâll be better soon. If you stay well, youâll be back to teaching by the end of November.â
âHow are my students?â Jenny asked. âHave any of them . . . ?â She couldnât bear to ask if any had died.
âNone of them dead yet, though some of my other patients have died,â he said. âBut the Binghams had it bad. All their children, especially young Meg. And one of the Abercrombie granddaughters.â
Jenny gasped. âThose poor families.â
âDonât open your school till all your students have been without scabs for two weeks,â Doc said, packing his bag. âSeems to be passed along while the pox are open and scabbing. And donât let William scratch. Or his scarsâll be worse, and he could get gangrene.â
Jenny grabbed a moment to write that evening:
