APPLES AND PEARS

A number of members of the Bar and, in my experience, fine members of the Bar – have Cockney accents. One friend, Colin Wells, does not give a moment’s consideration to the perceived smarter accent that was the plight of some barristers. A West Ham supporter, his pronunciation was honed on the terraces of the North Bank, and he deservedly has had a very successful career. Even had he bothered, he could never disguise his most obvious qualities of thorough charm and decency.

One practitioner might have overstepped credulity, but I really enjoyed her appearing before me at the Old Bailey, when I sat as a Recorder (an old term for a part-time Judge – not the musical instrument). She was cross-examining a witness in a not-veryserious assault case, and was suggesting that the club bouncer was interested in a woman on the dancefloor.

‘Did you get her digits?’ she asked.

I looked to confirm that the press were not there. ‘Did you what, Ms X?’

‘Get her digits, My Lord.’

I was now feigning ignorance and playing to the absent gallery.

‘Ask for her phone number,’ she needlessly explained.

I went into pompous mode: ‘Please, Ms X, this is not a bowling alley.’
