The Disir and Fylgja

The Norse tales contain references to spirits called Disir, whose nature is not clear. It is possible that the Disir are ancestral spirits or perhaps Elves, or it may be that the term is a catch-all for supernatural beings; a hypothesis borne out by references to Valkyries as ‘Odin’s Disir’. However, the term ‘Disir’ seems to apply mainly to female spirits, or beings who are generally beneficial. This does not mean that they are not warlike – some are very much so – but whether helping in battle or healing the sick, they seem to be seeking a positive outcome for the subject of their actions.
