Roark couldn’t get to Noel fast enough. His mate was bundled up under the desk, his arms covering his head. He jerked when Roark crawled next to him and tried to push himself further under the desk.

“It’s me.”

Noel peeked from behind his arms and relaxed. “What’s happening?”

“Someone shot at you.”

Roark heard the door open behind him and looked at Milo, who was peeking in. “Go back to your desk!” he yelled.

Milo paled and slammed the door shut. Roark was going to have to apologize to him later, but he had other, more important things to do right now. He took his phone out and dialed Kameron’s number, even though his first instinct was to reach out to Win like he was used to.

Kameron answered, and Roark barked. “Noel’s office. Someone shooting from the building in front.”

“Stay where you are.” Kameron hung up, and Roark put his phone away.

Noel was doing a good job of showing a brave face, but he was trembling, and Roark couldn’t resist. He sat next to his mate and pulled him into his arms, wrapping him in an embrace that was seventeen years late.

He couldn’t believe how much Noel relaxed as he pulled him into his lap. “What’s happening?” Noel asked again, his face pressed against Roark’s neck.

“Kameron’s taking care of everything.”

“How?”

“He probably already has an enforcer team in the building in front. He’ll call as soon as he’s sure we’re secure. You should tell Milo to stay where he is.”

“My phone’s on the desk.”

Roark reached up. He had to keep his head tilted sideways because the desk wasn’t high enough, and since he couldn’t move out, he had to search for the phone without looking. He bumped into several objects before he finally found what he was looking for. He handed Noel the phone and Noel texted Milo.

Roark’s phone vibrated before he could ask Noel what he’d told Milo. “Yes?”

“All clear. You need to take Noel home,” Kameron said.

“Got it.”

Roark was dying to know what was happening. He was usually on Kameron’s side of things, taking care of the bad guys and letting other people deal with the good ones. There was no way he was leaving Noel in someone else’s hands, though.

He nudged Noel. “Come on.”

Noel blinked at him. His cheeks were flushed and his eyes wide. “Is it okay to go?”

“Yes. Kameron made sure things are secured.”

“What happened?”

“I don’t know. He’ll probably come over to your apartment once he’s done dealing with everything.”

Roark slid Noel off his lap and got up. His back felt stiff even though he’d been under the desk for only a few minutes. He reached down and offered Noel his hand. He was glad when Noel took it, and he hauled his mate up. Noel leaned against him, and Roark couldn’t resist wrapping his arms around him for a few seconds again.

“Come on. You’ll feel better once you’re home.”

“I’m not so sure about that.”

Roark gathered Noel’s stuff and guided him out of his office. Milo was sitting behind his desk, biting his thumbnail.
