Roark couldnât get to Noel fast enough. His mate was bundled up under the desk, his arms covering his head. He jerked when Roark crawled next to him and tried to push himself further under the desk.
âItâs me.â
Noel peeked from behind his arms and relaxed. âWhatâs happening?â
âSomeone shot at you.â
Roark heard the door open behind him and looked at Milo, who was peeking in. âGo back to your desk!â he yelled.
Milo paled and slammed the door shut. Roark was going to have to apologize to him later, but he had other, more important things to do right now. He took his phone out and dialed Kameronâs number, even though his first instinct was to reach out to Win like he was used to.
Kameron answered, and Roark barked. âNoelâs office. Someone shooting from the building in front.â
âStay where you are.â Kameron hung up, and Roark put his phone away.
Noel was doing a good job of showing a brave face, but he was trembling, and Roark couldnât resist. He sat next to his mate and pulled him into his arms, wrapping him in an embrace that was seventeen years late.
He couldnât believe how much Noel relaxed as he pulled him into his lap. âWhatâs happening?â Noel asked again, his face pressed against Roarkâs neck.
âKameronâs taking care of everything.â
âHow?â
âHe probably already has an enforcer team in the building in front. Heâll call as soon as heâs sure weâre secure. You should tell Milo to stay where he is.â
âMy phoneâs on the desk.â
Roark reached up. He had to keep his head tilted sideways because the desk wasnât high enough, and since he couldnât move out, he had to search for the phone without looking. He bumped into several objects before he finally found what he was looking for. He handed Noel the phone and Noel texted Milo.
Roarkâs phone vibrated before he could ask Noel what heâd told Milo. âYes?â
âAll clear. You need to take Noel home,â Kameron said.
âGot it.â
Roark was dying to know what was happening. He was usually on Kameronâs side of things, taking care of the bad guys and letting other people deal with the good ones. There was no way he was leaving Noel in someone elseâs hands, though.
He nudged Noel. âCome on.â
Noel blinked at him. His cheeks were flushed and his eyes wide. âIs it okay to go?â
âYes. Kameron made sure things are secured.â
âWhat happened?â
âI donât know. Heâll probably come over to your apartment once heâs done dealing with everything.â
Roark slid Noel off his lap and got up. His back felt stiff even though heâd been under the desk for only a few minutes. He reached down and offered Noel his hand. He was glad when Noel took it, and he hauled his mate up. Noel leaned against him, and Roark couldnât resist wrapping his arms around him for a few seconds again.
âCome on. Youâll feel better once youâre home.â
âIâm not so sure about that.â
Roark gathered Noelâs stuff and guided him out of his office. Milo was sitting behind his desk, biting his thumbnail.
