Chapter Thirteen

Clem

After the universe calmed down from their scorching, spontaneous romp, and Clem felt he could think straight again, he looked over at Kaitlin, who happened to be looking at him.

“I should feel exhausted, but I can’t seem to get enough of you.”

“I need coffee.” She shifted to a sitting position and pulled the soft comforter up to cover her nakedness. “Coffee would be so delicious. Maybe a tad bit of cream and some sugar.”

“Yes, that would be good.” He threw off the blankets and climbed out of bed. “Want to go to the saloon? Damon serves a fabulous burger. We could hang out and maybe shoot a game of pool. How does that sound?”

“I’m game.” She followed him to the bathroom where Clem started the shower and they climbed in together.

“We can start our work week with the rest of the world on Monday,” he said. “We’ll get up like we’re going to work and set out to form our entity to help people. What do you think?” He soaped up her body and massaged her muscles. “Habitat for Blackwood? Blackwood in Need? Blackwood indeed.”

“Good Deeds.” She squirted body wash into her tiny hands and soaped his body clean.

“Oh wow,” he said. “I love that.”

Once they were clean, they changed and hopped into his car.

He texted Damon, who happened to be working the bar at the saloon, to let him know they were heading over.

They pulled into a spot in front and took in the town, which was decked out with pumpkins, mums, and ears of dried corn.

A walk into the saloon showed Damon had decorated for Halloween.

Black Cats.

Ghosts.

Scarecrows.

Witches.

Clem felt like his life was finding some order in the hominess that Blackwood provided.

“Halloween is coming.” He hardly recognized his voice. He hadn’t been this excited since his father got him a Batman costume. “We should do a Halloween parade for the kids.”

“And the grown-ups too,” Kaitlin said, smiling. “Everybody can get in on it,” she gushed and softly nudged her elbow into him.

Clem shook hands with Damon before all of them found a booth.

“Good news,” he said to Damon. “I went to Denver and got the guy to agree to let me let him off the hook.”

“That’s what Jennifer said,” said Damon.

“It turns out I don’t have to let him off the hook after all. They defaulted on the payment so it’s a done deal. The town reverts back to the corporation. It’s in Blackwood hands again,” said Clem.

“Good deal,” said Damon. “That means the recreation center stays.”

“Absolutely.” He wrapped his arm around his wife and pulled her close. “Kaitlin and I were thinking it would be fun to have a Halloween celebration. Nothing too complicated. We were at the Flannel Fest in Denver and I think Blackwood could use a celebration. What do you think?”

Damon nodded. “You may be on to something, but it takes a while to put on a fest, my friend.”

Jennifer emerged from the ladies’ room and hugged Kaitlin and him.

“Kaitlin and I were about to have a burger.
