Chapter 16 Ebony

How am I going to get through today, it’s hours until five when Zac is due to pick me up and I’m already bouncing off the walls with nerves. I’ve cleaned our miniscule kitchen from top to bottom and now I’ve finished the bathroom. One good thing about living in a shoe box is the speed if which you can clean it.

I’m trying to focus on my assignment, but I keep replaying every conversation with Zac, analyzing every word and facial expression. I still can’t believe he wants me to meet his mom and I’m amazed that she even knows about me. I’m forever grateful to him for saving me last night, I dread to think what would have happened if he wasn’t there. It is part of the job putting up with slimy men but last night was a whole new level of harassment.

I pick up my phone dialing Sasha, needing to hear a friendly voice.

“Hey Ebony, I was just about to call you. I wanted to ask if you fancy coming round for dinner tonight. Mom is making mac n cheese.”

“Oh shoot, I love her mac n cheese, but I can’t tonight.”

“Bummer, are you working again. Weren’t you like on a double shift yesterday?”

I’m silent for a moment chewing over whether my ears can take the high decibel onslaught if I tell her the truth.

“Ebony…you still there girl?”

“Yes, I’m here. I’m not working but I can’t do tonight.”

“Oh what you doing then?”

“Ok don’t freak out. Zac invited me to his house; I think for a meal.” I hear some crashing and banging noises as though she has dropped the phone. Giggling with amusement I smack my forehead with despair, she always puts a smile on my face.

“Hey you still there, Sasha.”

“What the fuck, I don’t see you for twenty-four hours and it’s like you just pulled the biggest mic drop on me.”

“Stop being dramatic, it’s not that deep.”

“Whaaatt the most gorgeous guy maybe to have ever walked this planet and potential future NFL player has invited you to his house, it is way deep it’s like deeper than the middle of the fucking ocean.”

I fall about laughing and all the nerves dissipate. Sasha is like a magician drawing all the anxiety and self-doubt from me, I’m not sure what I would do without her. Be very miserable that’s for damn sure.

“So tell me all the gory details, how, when, where.” She sounds impatient with curiosity, so I put her out of her misery.

“He came to Carters last night after the game while I was working. Some drunken schmuck tried to grope me, he came to the rescue. He insisted on driving me home and that’s when he asked me.” I leave out the bit about his mom as I don’t know if he would want me sharing that, but I wish I could tell Sasha that because then she would realize that he is not inviting me round because he is into me but because he wants to help his mom out.
