Chapter Six

Ty dragged his weary body into the changing rooms, slumping on the seat near his gear bag. The other players were in about the same shape. The coach bore a brutal streak and it had appeared with startling stealth today.

“Look for the team list for Saturday’s game on the notice board when you leave. I’m playing around with combinations this week.” The coach scanned their faces, nodded and stomped off without another word.

“Sounds ominous,” Steve muttered.

Ty’s stomach bucked. He’d been off his game and thought the coach might have reacted to his off-form. Half an hour later, he scanned the team list. On the bench. Not too bad. It could’ve been worse. At least he’d made the official team.

“Am I in?” Darcy asked, coming up behind him.

“You’re in your usual position. I’m on the bench.”

Darcy gave his shoulder a quick squeeze of sympathy before letting his hand fall away. Ty stepped back to let the rest of the team read the list.

“Who’s for a drink?” Steve asked.

“Not me,” Ty said. “I need to study for my exams.”

“What about you?” one of the forwards asked Darcy.

Darcy grinned. “I’m going clubbing.”

The forward’s brows shot up. “To one of them gay places?”

“Yeah. You wanna come with me?” Darcy asked.

Ty smirked when a peculiar choking sound emerged from the forward, and everyone fell silent.

The burly man turned red in the face. “Fuck off.”

Everyone sniggered.

Another one of the forwards fluttered his eyelashes. “Can I go with you?”

“Your wife might have something to say about that,” Darcy said. “I’m frightened of her.”

Another snicker warmed Ty through. The fact the rest of the players joked with Darcy about his sexual orientation proved their acceptance. It might have taken time, but he was one of them now.

Everyone dispersed and Ty took a moment to have a quiet aside with Darcy. “I’ll drop by after I’ve done a couple of hours of study.”

“I look forward to it.” Darcy glanced over his shoulder and leaned closer. “I wanna do bad things with you, babe.”

A grin split Ty’s face. “Done deal.”

Three hours later, he jumped into his car. He hadn’t made time to search for an apartment yet, but he’d put the word out to his teammates. A start. He made a mental note to ring an estate agent who specialized in rentals after his varsity lecture the next day.

“Tyson!” His father appeared in front of Ty’s car.

Damn. Irritation flared in Ty. His hands curled around the wheel as his father approached the driver’s side. Sighing, Ty pushed the window release. “Did you want something?”

“Where are you going?”

“Out.” Ty couldn’t prevent the bleed of annoyance that colored his voice. He wasn’t a kid any longer. Sometimes his father seemed to forget.

“Don’t you think you should have an early night? Your game is off at present. You’re sluggish, as if your mind is only half on the job. You need to stop chasing girls and concentrate on the main prize.”

Shades of the conversation he’d heard since girls first started noticing him. “I’ve been studying for finals.
