Chapter Eighteen
It was more than habit, perhaps closer to wishful thinking, but when he got in the shower, he twisted the hot water tap—the stream that came spurting out felt like snow that melted not five minutes earlier, it hit him as hard as if he had leaped off a creek bank on a summer’s day—and immersed himself in cold, clear water. He stood there, shivering and quaking, sure he was turning blue and would shortly turn into the world’s biggest popsicle. The freezing cold water was awful. It also felt almighty wonderful. Refreshing. Cleansing. Invigorating. Wolfe threw his head back and laughed, delighted with this marvelous turn of events. A shower. An actual, honest-to-Pete shower! Who the heck would have believed it? He hadn’t felt this clean since before the war. Since then, the best he’d been able to manage was to dip water out of a stream or a pond or just a puddle at a roadside ditch and try to clean himself with that. This, he decided, was infinitely better. He felt good, really good when he finally turned the water off. He only was willing to get out then because he was becoming numb and thought he might not be able to shut the tap off if he stayed under the frigid flow any longer. But, my, did he feel good!
Wolfe found himself humming. It took a moment to recall what the tune was. Then when he remembered, it sobered him. The tune was the theme for Disney’s ‘It’s a Small World.’ That was his son’s favorite among all the wonders he found there.
Feeling a trifle subdued, Wolfe rubbed himself thoroughly, as much to get some circulation back as dry off, with the towel that had a fresh, marvelous scent that comes from being dried in the sunshine. That felt almost as good as the shower had. It would have been nice if he had had clean clothes to change in to, but the spares Gary Canfield gave him were in the rucksack, hidden away on the hillside a couple of miles off. Now, all he needed to make everything complete, Wolfe figured as he walked out into the main part of the house, was a cold beer and a football game on television. Even without those things, though, life was pretty dang good. It was nice to be reminded of that.
