“How much further?” complained Melanie. Her legs were growing tired, and her patience was wearing thin. This wasn’t her idea of a good time. She wasn’t into nature and the great outdoors. That was Derek, not her—he loved this sort of shit. It had been his idea to come camping out here for the weekend. Their tent was pitched at the campsite just outside of Morton, and right now, they were looking for the picturesque waterfalls that littered the landscape in the area.

“Stop moaning,” giggled Sophie. Clearly, she didn’t dislike hiking half as much as Melanie did. “That’s all you ever do, you know? Moan, moan, moan!” Sophie was in hysterics then, undeterred by the look of annoyance that had burned itself onto Melanie’s face. Sophie was Melanie’s best friend. She and her boyfriend, Mike, had agreed to tag along for the weekend—a fact that Melanie was infinitely grateful for.

“She’s right, you know?” laughed Derek, looping his arm around Melanie’s shoulder, not really noticing as she shrugged it away. “You just need to relax. Try to enjoy yourself. The fresh air will do you the world of good!”

“Really?” scoffed Melanie. “Because right now, I feel as if it’s burning my lungs!”

Derek laughed. “That’ll be the cigarettes.”

Melanie was frowning now. “Excuse me . . . You smoke too, remember?”

“Yeah, but I’m not the one complaining about being out of breath.”

Melanie rolled her eyes.

“Stop teasing her,” Mike said with a smirk as he walked hand in hand with Sophie. “It’s not her fault; she can’t help it if she’s a city girl through and through.”

Melanie offered Mike a weak smile. “Thanks, Mike!”

They continued walking for a little while longer until they found an expansive clearing. A fallen tree invited Melanie to take a seat. Without waiting for permission from the others—not that she needed it, of course—she slumped down onto the uncomfortable trunk, groaning like a pensioner as her creaking knees thanked her for the respite. “Can we please just take a rest?” she sighed, with no intention of standing up again any time soon.

“Don’t you want to find the waterfalls?” asked Derek.

“Why?” scoffed Melanie. “It’s too cold to go swimming anyway.”

“Well,” said Sophie as she slung her rucksack off her back and dropped it to the ground, “if we’re gonna be stopping here for a while, I think I’m going to pop to the little girl’s room.” She planted a gentle kiss onto Mike’s cheek, then disappeared through the trees.

“Don’t go too far, okay?” Mike called after her.

“Don’t worry, I won’t.”

Melanie removed her own rucksack and set it on the ground. She laid back on the horizontal tree trunk, her hands tucked up beneath her head. Despite how uncomfortable this was, Melanie felt as if she might just fall asleep. A wave of exhaustion swept over her, her eyes growing heavy.

Just then, an ear-splitting scream issued through the forest, the sound seeming as if it was emanating from all around, carried along by the light breeze that flowed through the trees.

But it wasn’t coming from all around .
