âHow much further?â complained Melanie. Her legs were growing tired, and her patience was wearing thin. This wasnât her idea of a good time. She wasnât into nature and the great outdoors. That was Derek, not herâhe loved this sort of shit. It had been his idea to come camping out here for the weekend. Their tent was pitched at the campsite just outside of Morton, and right now, they were looking for the picturesque waterfalls that littered the landscape in the area.
âStop moaning,â giggled Sophie. Clearly, she didnât dislike hiking half as much as Melanie did. âThatâs all you ever do, you know? Moan, moan, moan!â Sophie was in hysterics then, undeterred by the look of annoyance that had burned itself onto Melanieâs face. Sophie was Melanieâs best friend. She and her boyfriend, Mike, had agreed to tag along for the weekendâa fact that Melanie was infinitely grateful for.
âSheâs right, you know?â laughed Derek, looping his arm around Melanieâs shoulder, not really noticing as she shrugged it away. âYou just need to relax. Try to enjoy yourself. The fresh air will do you the world of good!â
âReally?â scoffed Melanie. âBecause right now, I feel as if itâs burning my lungs!â
Derek laughed. âThatâll be the cigarettes.â
Melanie was frowning now. âExcuse me . . . You smoke too, remember?â
âYeah, but Iâm not the one complaining about being out of breath.â
Melanie rolled her eyes.
âStop teasing her,â Mike said with a smirk as he walked hand in hand with Sophie. âItâs not her fault; she canât help it if sheâs a city girl through and through.â
Melanie offered Mike a weak smile. âThanks, Mike!â
They continued walking for a little while longer until they found an expansive clearing. A fallen tree invited Melanie to take a seat. Without waiting for permission from the othersânot that she needed it, of courseâshe slumped down onto the uncomfortable trunk, groaning like a pensioner as her creaking knees thanked her for the respite. âCan we please just take a rest?â she sighed, with no intention of standing up again any time soon.
âDonât you want to find the waterfalls?â asked Derek.
âWhy?â scoffed Melanie. âItâs too cold to go swimming anyway.â
âWell,â said Sophie as she slung her rucksack off her back and dropped it to the ground, âif weâre gonna be stopping here for a while, I think Iâm going to pop to the little girlâs room.â She planted a gentle kiss onto Mikeâs cheek, then disappeared through the trees.
âDonât go too far, okay?â Mike called after her.
âDonât worry, I wonât.â
Melanie removed her own rucksack and set it on the ground. She laid back on the horizontal tree trunk, her hands tucked up beneath her head. Despite how uncomfortable this was, Melanie felt as if she might just fall asleep. A wave of exhaustion swept over her, her eyes growing heavy.
Just then, an ear-splitting scream issued through the forest, the sound seeming as if it was emanating from all around, carried along by the light breeze that flowed through the trees.
But it wasnât coming from all around .
