As soon as Tavin opened his front door, he knew something was off. He hadnât been home in two weeks, courtesy of a cyber crime training heâd done at Quantico, so his house should smell somewhat stale and dusty. Instead, the faint scent of cooking lingered, as well asâ¦cologne? His hand on his gun, he cautiously entered. The neat row of shoes under the coat rack had been disturbed, and his umbrella was in a different spot. Someone had been in his house.
He pulled his gun, carefully closed the front door, and walked farther into his house. Everything was quiet besides the familiar hum of the fridge, the ticking of the heating when it switched on, and the creaking of the floor underneath his feet. He flicked on the light with his left hand. No one was there, and yetâ¦
The pillows on the couch were dented as if someone had lounged against them, and his dining table was slightly out of place. He always centered it exactly under the chandelier. Then he spotted a folded piece of paper on the table. Nordin. It had to be from Nordin. No one else wouldâve gained access to Tavinâs house without a key. What the hell had Nordin been thinking?
Frustration bubbling, Tavin lowered his gun, though he held on to it for now, and picked up the paper. Yup, heâd been right. Nordin had been here.
Dearest Tavin,
I needed a place to stay for a few days, and I knew you were away for training, so I stayed at your house. Had my brothers for our weekly dinner yesterday and found food in your freezer. The lamb stew was amazing, the pot roast delicious, and my brother Jaren totally approved of the bottle of Saint-Ãmilion Grand Cru. Thank you for your hospitality, even if it was unintended.
Always,
Nordin
PS I also needed something clean to wear, so I went through your closet. You have the softest T-shirts on the planet, so I took two. Iâm sure you donât mind. They smell like you too, which is a bonus.
PPS Iâm at the Hilton Garden Inn in case you were wondering.
Tavin should be furious. He should be absolutely livid Nordin had pulled a stunt like this, that heâd broken into Tavinâs homeâhow heâd gotten in was something Tavin definitely needed to look intoâand had eaten his food, stayed in his house, used his shower, and even taken some of his clothes. It was outrageous and insane, and Tavin should be beyond angryâ¦but he wasnât.
He stared at Nordinâs elegant handwriting. Who did things like that? Nordin Foster, that was who, and Tavin couldnât even muster a little bit of anger. Instead, he put down his gun, grabbed his phone, and pulled up the feed from his security cameras. How had Nordin gotten past those? He checked the notifications.
Wait. The day before, a notification showed that the alarm for his house had been turned off remotely at four p.m., then turned back on at eight that Saturday. How
