October 3rd arrived. Nickâs Birthday.
Nick had seen Bart every evening, and Oliver too had met him and liked him, or so he said. On the previous day, Oliver had told Nick that Richard was going to give him a birthday party. Nick asked why, and Oliver replied simply that he deserved a party and, Oliverâs place being out of bounds, Richard had suggested his own large flat on Chichester Terrace.
âThatâs very generous,â Nick replied. âCan I bring Bart along?â
âIf he wants to come, of course. But isnât he rather wary of this world of ours? Or do you want to break him in to all the naughty behaviour that can happen between men at parties?â
âWeâve talked a lot about all that,â Nick replied, and he had. âLately weâve been discussing going to one of the pubs, but Bart is still a bit reluctant.â
âBut pubs are so discreet!â
âJust ask Richard to make sure this party will be discreet as well. For my sake as well as Bartâs. I donât like walking in on sex in bedrooms when you go to get your coat.â
Oliver winced at this last comment as if he were under attack.
âRichard would not tolerate that, but he canât stop a little petting and kissing. I expect there will be some dancing as well.â
âIf itâs as Jane Austen as you make it sound Oliver, there will be no problem.â
Nick didnât care much for Jane Austen, but he thought on this occasion, it was useful to use her as an analogy. He remembered a few years back, a party in Brunswick Square, where he had given in to the temptation of sex with strangers. The thought sickened him.
Later that evening, after Oliver had left, Nick explained to Bart that Oliver had organised a party for him and Bart responded enthusiastically.
âWill there be any women?â he asked tentatively.
âA few. I think Richard has some women friends. So do I, but I doubt if any of mine will be free tomorrow. Do you mind if it is mainly men?â
âOf course not,â Bart replied, but there was a touch of bravado in his voice that betrayed a certain fear of the kind of people who might be there. âDo you know them all?â he questioned.
âItâs a surprise party. I didnât know about it myself until earlier. I havenât had any time to chase after my other friends who are mainly heterosexual and rather bookish. I donât think it would be their sort of thing anyway.â
Bart shrugged his shoulders.
âIt will be a surprise for both of us then,â he said.
