Don watched from the driverâs seat of his car as chaos broke out all around the school. People seemed to be descending on the place in droves, but he couldnât for the life of him figure out why. He was now regretting being roped into being Marie Wardâs undesignated chauffeur.
After the incident with their lawn care guy, his heart had softened a bit toward his otherwise pesky neighbor, but his patience would only go so far, and were wearing thin.
Sitting in the parking lot, he made up his mind. When she came out with her son, he was going to put his foot down, informing Marie he would only be taking her home from the schoolâno other stops along the way.
Now, as scared looking adults and children ran from scarier looking adults and children, Donâs brief moment of chivalry was over. He started his car and waited for the way to clear so he could back out of the parking lot and leave this madness behind.
When a woman and child ran and hid behind another car, he made his move. Shifting into reverse, he whipped the car out with precision, seamlessly shifting into drive, and made for the exit. A large blue pickup truck cut him off before he could drive onto the road that led off school grounds.
âDickhead!â he yelled, tapping the horn twice.
As he was about to follow, something slammed into the back of his car, causing him to jerk his head around and look. A vagrant looking person was standing near the trunk. Don shifted into park, released his seatbelt, and threw open the driverâs door.
âWhat the shit was that?â he asked, walking toward the rear of the car. âIf thereâs any damage, youâll have to pay for it. This town is going to shit. I swear, I have never in my life seen such crazâ¦â His word hung in the air as he saw the person that ran into his car was missing an arm and part of their lower jaw.
Rheumy eyes, sunken with blackened veins, looked at him. Feeling the hair on his arms stand up, Don slowly stepped back toward the open door. The personâs gaze remained locked on him and they started to follow him around the car.
âJ-just stay back, buddy. I⦠Itâs fine. No harm. Go on about your business.â
Don jumped and yelped when he backed into the door, quickly sliding into the driverâs seat, pulling the door shut behind him. The person came around and stared at him through the window, pressing their filthy, bloody hand on the glass, smearing it. Don groaned in disgust, facing forward just in time to see Marie, her son, another boy and girl, along with her husband, Jake, jump into the obnoxious truck and screech away.
âThat pesky, fucking bitch!â he exclaimed.
Putting the car in drive, Don started to follow, but had to slam on the brakes when a large group of people came running out of the school, failing to look for any oncoming traffic, and disperse across the school grounds.
