“So, are you ready?” my dad asked as I got in his black two door Chevy Impala. We were headed to Warner Robins, outside of Macon, Georgia so I could meet my brothers for the first time. We'd all spoken briefly over the phone when I'd had lunch with my dad, but that is nothing like meeting them face to face.
My dad and I were very much alike and enjoyed the same things. He loved traveling, reading, and eating out; but I knew that when he said he wanted to do lunch. I wouldn’t have these things in common with anyone else. His birthday was in June and he had five other siblings, so I knew I had a lot of cousins that were probably dying to meet me.
“Yeah, I’m ready. Just a little nervous about them liking me or not,” I admitted.
He looked over at me. “Now, why wouldn’t they like you? I just had a conversation with you and I wouldn’t have a daughter any other way except like you.”
I started smiling and for the first time my smile was bigger and brighter than it had ever been since I was a little girl. “That is so sweet, Daddy. I feel like a princess since I met you.”
“And you are a princess. After we're done, we’re all driving back to Atlanta and going shopping, and I want you to get anything you want,” he replied.
“Aw, Daddy that is so sweet of you, but you really don’t have to. I just want to chill and get to know you guys better,” I told him. I wasn’t really up for the shopping, but I also didn’t want to turn down his offer. However, I didn’t want to make this relationship based off of money either. I really was searching for this missing piece and didn’t want him to think I was like my mother ― money hungry.
“Ivey, I know you; and from the looks of your car and apartment, I know you like the finer things in life. I’ve already missed out on 16 years. Speaking of cars and apartments, it’s time I drill you with some questions,” he said.
I looked at the mileage on the roadside sign, to figure out how many miles remained until we made it to Macon; it said 75 miles left. I thought, here we go. I knew it was coming; the questions about how I was making a living. He was just waiting for the right time.
“I did a little background check on you before I got the courage to come and meet you and I didn’t find any employment history. How are you surviving?” he asked curiously.
I didn’t feel the need to lie to him about anything so I decided to tell him the truth. “I had a problem with someone I use to talk to and decided to settle it by taking his money,” I replied.
“This must have been an ex-boyfriend or something? Ivey, that’s a dangerous game. I hope you know you were playing with fire when you did that.
