“At age 11, she organized her first public meeting and gave her first public speech, to raise money for school textbooks,” according to The New York Times. At that time, though tuition was free in public schools such as Golda’s, textbooks were not, a great hardship for families such as hers. To raise the money, Golda rallied other girls to form a group called the American Young Sisters’ Society that mounted a program of speeches and recitations. They were able to buy fifteen textbooks. Their activities were covered in the Milwaukee Journal under the headline “Children Help Poor in School.”
