Forty-two minutes later, we were heading downstairs to meet the guys, like directed. I was purposely late, for no other reason than I wanted to be difficult. Plus, I was trying to think of what to say to him when I saw him, but all my plans flew out the window the second those green eyes met mine and I noticed him standing there, a giant smile on his stupidly perfect face.
âYouâre a freaking prince?â I shouted.
He instantly looked behind him at Blaire, who threw up his hands and shook his head.
âYou knew Iâd let it slip,â Blaire confessed, not much of a defense at all.
Patrick took a step toward me, his eyes filled with what looked like regret. âWhy are ye so angry?â
âI donât know!â I stomped, acting like a crazy girl with a thousand emotions running through her all at once. âI feel like you lied to me, I guess.â
âI didnât lie.â
âBut you didnât tell me.â
âThere wasnât a right time, sweetheart.â
âNo.â I put up one hand in a stop motion and stepped away from him. âDonât sweet-talk me right now. I canât handle hearing your accent. Were you ever going to tell me?â
That was the question I wanted the answer to the most. Because for whatever reason, it felt like it mattered. If he wasnât going to tell me who he was and where he had come from, what else wasnât he going to mention?
âI donât know,â he said honestly, and I started fuming.
âWhy not?â I sat down on the wooden bench and put my head between my hands, trying to calm myself.
âBecause it doesnât matter,â he said, sitting down next to me.
I wanted to scoot away, but I liked his nearness. Our bodies called to each other. Even when I was pissed at him, my body betrayed me.
âHow can it not matter?â I asked before looking up and seeing the sign for the inn. âThe Princeâs Inn. Oh my God. And you own it. And youâre a prince. And ...â I stuttered, feeling dumb all over again.
âItâs a play on words. Wasnât meant to be real, but everyone here already knows Iâm a prince. I used to come here with my mum when I was a kid.â
Talking about his dead mother was a low blow. He knew there was no way I could stay angry with him when he brought her into the conversation.
âThen, tell me why it doesnât matter. Are you going to be a king? Where are you a prince? How is this a real conversation Iâm having right now?â
The very idea of royalty was so foreign to me. Since we didnât have kings or queens in America, the subject had always felt more like a made-up fairy tale than something that was real. The whole thing was ... far-fetched, and I had no clue how any of it worked.
âTell me the truth,â I said, needing to hear all of it.
âWeâll give you two some time alone. Come on, love,â Blaire interrupted before grabbing Tyraâs hand and disappearing out of view right as my stomach growled loud enough for us both to hear.
