THE FOG OF the morning was creeping down the street. It was touching the earth with a heaviness I couldn’t begin to describe. Barefoot and cloaked in a blanket, I was sitting on the front porch, holding onto one arm of my rocking chair and grasping onto a warm coffee mug with my other hand. My eyes were fixed straight ahead. My body was exhausted and I refused to make any other movement from where I sat rocking forward and backward.
The van.
It was back.
I could barely see the tip of my nose protruding from my face, but I saw the headlights through the murkiness of the morning moving down the road. The lights turned to the right and stopped straight ahead. I only knew the car had halted when I saw the white of the lights become red.
Thirty minutes.
The car had been sitting in place for half an hour. Unmoving. Still. I couldn’t be sure someone had gotten out, but no lights had turned on in the house and I never heard a door creak open or slam shut.
Cardinal-colored beams continued to cut through the fog. Splicing through what would appear to be a solemn, quiet morning for every other soul on this street.
But I was waiting for something . . . anything . . . to happen.
The door behind me opened and shut, but I didn’t turn my head away from the lights shining red in front of me. Stassi sat down in the chair next to me. It felt like it had been forever since we had done this. However, there were so many things different about this morning. I wasn’t looking forward to being joined by my daughter. I wanted to be alone.
“Mom?” Her voice was much clearer than it had been the night before.
“Yes?” I kept my focus ahead as I acknowledged her.
“I brought you some tea.” She nudged my shoulder.
My eyes shifted to look to my left. I only watched Stassi as she held a mug in her small hands, offering it to me. I turned my head away from her and continued to look ahead.
“I already have coffee. Thank you.” My voice was small and croaked.
“I really think you should have some tea.” Her voice changed and almost sounded demonic.
I slowly turned my head, afraid of what I was going to see. Was I dreaming again? Every instance of my life was becoming a blur. I could no longer decipher if I was awake or if my eyelids were tightly shut. I felt like I was awake, but why else would Stassi sound like that. She had only ever become a monster in my dreams . . . or so I thought.
Once I finally looked at her face, I realized I must have been sleep deprived. The beautiful blonde was my girl. She was still holding the cup out for me, urging me to take it from her.
“Did you say something else, Stassi? I told you I already have coffee.”
“I said I really think you should have some tea.
