Chapter Eleven
Natalie opened her eyes and noticed the filtered light of early morning slipping into the windows. Where was she? It took her a second to remember that she was at Jamesâs house, and that sheâd slept over because the storm had rolled in a lot faster than she thought it would.
God, she was in his bed.
On her left, Natalie saw the hulking form of his lordship, on his back, arm thrown over his head, mouth slightly open. A light snore escaped with each breath.
It was like long-lost music to her ears.
Reaching for her phone on the night table she focused on a slew of messages that had come in. She was sure one was from Liam, and then there would be scattered messages from her family. Natalie had gone completely off the grid in the middle of a major storm without so much as a word to anyone who cared about her. Wasnât she just a peach? She owed every single person an apology.
She was right about the text from Liamâhis was first.
Where are you? Your car is here but you arenât.
Iâm fine, Iâm fine. Iâm next door. Iâll be over in a little while.
Should I ask? he responded.
Natalie sent a one-word answer: No.
âNat? Are you okay?â James. His voice, husky with sleep, surprised her, but then she realized she must have repeated that last text aloud to herself. This was awkward. Last night when she drove up all she was thinking about was him. She was reckless, which at least kept her on brand.
âIâm fine. Sorry I woke you. I have a dozen text messages from people wondering where I am. Iâm just so considerate that way.â
He sat and scrubbed his hands over his face. âStorm looks to have passed. What time is it?â
âItâs a little after seven. I think the power is back.â
âBedroom lights on,â he said to the AI device. It obliged by turning on the lights. âWe do indeed have power. Iâll be right back.â
He headed into the loo, while Nat answered all her texts, reassuring everyone she was fine. She let them know sheâd stayed with a friend when the storm intensified. That seemed to calm most people, and honestly, she would have texted if sheâd had a signal, but the cell service was crap.
When he emerged, James sat next to her on the edge of the bed. He had that wonderful, musky smell she remembered when he would wake after a good nightâs sleep. Every nerve ending fired in response. âHave you calmed the masses?â
âI think so. Thank you for putting me up. I know you werenât expectingâ¦â
He silenced her with a kiss that was gentle and sweet, and held the promise of whatever she wanted.
âOh. Ah, good morning.â
âGood morning.â His face was inches from hers, just a tiny movement by either one of them and their mouths would meet again. âWe need to talk about a few things.â
âI suppose we do.â She caught his essence, a scent that was deep and earthy. She could practically taste his breath, cool and minty.
