Chapter 32

Freeman saw Gardner at his desk as she walked into the office and asked, ‘What’re you doing here?’

‘I work here,’ he said.

‘What about Lawton? Is she all right by herself?’

‘She’ll be fine. I think she wanted rid of me. I think I was hovering too much.’ Freeman sat down across from him. ‘Plus, the dog was taking up the rest of the settee. It just climbed straight on there. No invitation or anything,’ he said, indignantly.

Freeman smiled at him. ‘I thought you liked dogs.’

‘I do. Just not on my settee,’ he said, taking his glasses off. ‘You’ve spoken to Andrew Blake again?’

‘Yeah,’ she said. ‘And I like him even less than I did before. He did this. I know it.’

‘Did what?’

‘Whatever it is that’s happened to Katy Jackson. He lied about going home that day. Lied about looking for her. I think he made her quit her job. I think he made her change her phone number, stop seeing her friends.’

‘What about Johnston?’

‘What about him?’

‘You don’t think he has any involvement in this?’ Gardner asked.

‘I’m starting to doubt it. I mean, why would he?’

‘Well, it was his house for starters. And Katy was in there, we know that. Plus he’s definitely up to something. Him and Scott.’

‘You spoke to him again?’

Gardner nodded. ‘I followed him first. He did exactly the same as Lee. Was heading the same way and then he saw me and changed direction.’

‘I think someone needs lessons in how to follow people,’ Freeman said but Gardner ignored her and continued.

‘He saw me and panicked and went home. I asked where he was going and he gave me some cock and bull about roadworks. He’s lying. And his story about Sunday didn’t match Lawton’s. They were up to something, I know it.’

‘Something to do with Katy? Like what? And if they were already doing something on Sunday when they ran into Katy, why harm her on Tuesday?’

‘Maybe she heard something she shouldn’t have. Maybe when she showed up on Tuesday she saw them doing whatever they were planning on Sunday. She just got in the way.’

‘Wasn’t Scott at work on Tuesday?’

‘I don’t know. He was when I swung by on the evening. Doesn’t mean he was there all day.’

‘Okay,’ Freeman said. ‘So, maybe Lee and Scott did something. But we can’t dismiss other options.’

‘Like Andrew Blake, you mean?’

‘Or, like Dominic Archer. Or even this burglar guy. We need to keep an open mind.’

‘Like you’re doing with Andrew Blake? Why would Andrew bother to take her next door to do something to her?’

‘I don’t think he would intentionally. I think Katy did go there, alone, because she was friends with Lawton. And then Andrew found out she wasn’t being a good little girl, wasn’t doing as she was told, and went home to let her know that. And then things got out of hand.’

‘And what? He killed her? Then where’s the body?’

‘I don’t know yet. I’m working on it.’

‘And it still doesn’t explain how Katy got in there in the first place.
