Stroud's success as a bird breeder encouraged prison officials to allow other prisoners to develop handicrafts and related small businesses. Since the convicts were for the most part a bunch of crooks, the inevitable happened and some small enterprises blossomed into rackets. Stroud was allowed to expand his bird laboratory into an adjoining and empty cell, but prison officials grew furious when they found him using laboratory equipment to make whiskey. In 1931 a crackdown came and restrictions were ordered on prison businesses. Stroud was ordered to close down and get rid of the birds. That ended his career as an active birder, but not his fame.
