Devil’s Water

The castle stands amongst mature trees above Devil’s Water. The name conjures up a popular misinterpretation. It derives from the Norman holders of the barony - the d’Eivills.

The family may have been sensitive about sound association. The name was Anglicised to Dyvelston.

The considerable foundations of the d’Eivill fortress were uncovered during 19 th century excavations. They are close to the walls of the present castle.

Where the ground slopes down to the river the remains of two underground passages were discovered. One of these probably linked with an underground room from which steps were cut through the rock to stream level.
