A Ride with Mr. Darcy

It took Elizabeth just a little time to accustom herself to riding on Magnificence. The stable hand and Mr. Darcy helped her into the saddle, and the groom adjusted the seating position so that her legs were positioned to the left of the mare. Elizabeth’s maid was on hand to adjust the train of her riding habit so that it covered her legs in just the perfect drape.

Mr. Darcy made sure that his wife was fully comfortable in the saddle before mounting his own horse. His was a good few hands larger, and had the haughty air of a thoroughbred that knew exactly how handsome he was.

Like master, like beast, Elizabeth thought to herself, allowing herself a private smile.

At first, Elizabeth was not sure if she was balanced correctly. But once Magnificence began to walk, her rider found herself growing more confident.

She could see the tops of the privet hedge, and it was possible to see right across the south pond from her vantage point on horseback.

“What a wonderful view we have from up here!” she exclaimed. “I shall see Pemberley in a whole new light from this angle.”

“Indeed. I shall take us on a scenic route to the picnic spot too. Would you care to see the lake at dusk?”

“That sounds wonderful.”

Mr. Darcy’s horse led the way on the narrower paths between hedges. Magnificence seemed content to follow the larger animal. Though she had only just arrived at Pemberley, the horse behaved impeccably. Elizabeth was grateful. She felt as though she was in good hands — or hooves.

When the path widened, Mr. Darcy fell back so that he was riding alongside her. Elizabeth turned to smile at him. Her grip on the reins had loosened since the journey had begun. She felt bolder by the moment.

“You are a natural, Mrs. Darcy,” her husband said, with an admiring glance. “Usually, beginners require far more instruction than you did. I wonder if you might have had lessons discreetly while I wasn’t looking?”

Elizabeth chuckled. “I wish I had. My family definitely could not afford to send me for riding lessons, nor to instruct a visiting tutor. Jane was permitted to take some instruction one year, but we only had horses for the carriage and were not permitted to ride them in case we tired them out.”

“That is a shame. Never mind. But you can make up for it now. Magnificence is here for you to ride whenever you wish. She is at your disposal.”

Elizabeth could hardly believe her luck. Riding was every bit as exhilarating as she had hoped it would be.

Her husband was even more marvellous than she had realised.

And they were spending the evening together alone, in a remote spot, watching the sunset.

“Is Georgiana eating alone?” she said suddenly, looking over her shoulder as though Georgiana might be behind them shouting “What about me?”

“Do not worry, my love. Our cousin Anne is visiting for dinner this evening. She wishes to discuss the planning of a family social event with Georgiana, and said she would welcome the time alone with her.
