Derek kept listening to the radio. Kept waiting for the gunman to come over the line with another threat. Five minutes after Autumn ended her call with Hendrix, there was still nothing.
Instead, his mind went back to the conversation heâd had with Autumn earlier. She said she was happy that they had met, too. That sent a wave of delight over him. Maybe something good could come out of this situation. He would be a lucky man to have someone like Autumn by his side.
Derek glanced over at Autumn again and saw her flinch.
âYouâre still in pain,â he muttered.
He saw the discomfort written on her face. But he tried not to push too hard. But seeing that cut...that couldnât feel good.
âIâll be okay,â she insisted.
âIf you donât feel like walking, we can stay here for longer.â
She let out a slow breath and glanced around. âIt is tempting. I was really hoping that backup would be here. Iâm afraid if we go back to that cave, weâre going to need to stay there. I donât know if I can manage another trip back this way. I need food. And my leg hurts.â
He nodded, knowing that they were both reaching the ends of their ropes.
âWe can stay here as long as you need. You think weâre safe from those men?â
âI havenât heard them. Iâve been listening. But we would still be wise to keep our eyes open. The last thing we need is to be ambushed.â
âLet me walk to the top of that mountain and see if I can spot anybody. How does that sound?â
âSeems like a good idea.â
He patted her knee before climbing to the top of the ridge. From there, he should be able to see what was going on around them.
With the storms that had come through, many of the trees had lost their leaves. That didnât help Derek and Autumn when they needed to hide, but it did help when it came to surveillance.
He scanned everything around them. On an ordinary day, he would be awestruck by the beauty surrounding him. But right now, all of this just felt like a big trap they were unable to escape.
First scan, he saw nothing.
He almost walked back down to Autumn, but he paused. He would look one more time just to be certain.
As he did, he saw something move to the west.
His muscles tensed. Was that what he thought it was?
He ducked behind a tree, just to be certain.
It was.
Two men walked their way. They were at least five hundred feet away, probably. That didnât leave them much time to hide.
He had to get back to Autumn, and he had to get back to her now.
