Chapter 7

KIERON

Gentle waves rocked the boat as it sliced through the water and the wind whipped through my hair. The sun shone overhead, warming my bare chest, and creating a soft orange glow behind my closed eyelids as I tilted my face up. The sound of Shaw’s deep voice circled around me as he chatted with the others in our group. We’d spent a lot of time with them over the past couple of days and it made me happy to see him warming up to them. Of course, with all the time spent together, we had gotten to know each other better too and with each little thing I learned, with every new glimpse of the real Shaw, I liked him more and more.

His laughter filled the air and I smiled. True to his word, he had made a real effort to be friendlier, not only with me but with everyone and it was as if, in doing so, he’d given himself permission to relax and enjoy himself while he was here. I liked it and it was easy to see the others did too, as they traded stories with him and included him in their conversations. Shaw fit with these people, whether he believed it or not.

The wind suddenly died down as the boat slowed. A small group of us had decided to go snorkeling and the excitement was palpable as the boat came to a stop in the water. Everyone began gathering their gear as the captain went over a few last-minute instructions. Shaw’s eyes caught with mine and I saw panic within those pure blue depths.

“Are you okay?” I whispered, pretending to tighten the straps on his lifejacket.

He winced. “I’ve never done this before.”

I cocked my head at him. “You’ve never snorkeled?”

Shaw shook his head. “Before this week, I’d never even seen the ocean much less swam in it. Growing up, we couldn’t exactly afford luxuries like vacations,” he admitted quietly. I was thrilled that he’d been willing to share even that much with me. Only a few short days before, he never would have considered opening up to me like that. It gave me hope that maybe he was starting to trust me.

I smiled reassuringly. “Well, you’re lucky because I’ve been plenty of times. Stay by my side and we’ll go slow, okay? That is, if you want to. We can always hang out on the boat if you’d rather.”

He looked out at some of the others who were already swimming away from the boat, the rubber fins they wore splashing in the water as they kicked their feet. He turned to me, his jaw set with determination. “No, I want to do this.”

I let go of his lifejacket and patted his chest. “Good. I think you’d be disappointed if you’d let yourself miss out on this. It’s an amazing experience.”

We pulled the fins on our feet and I helped Shaw secure his mask, giving him time to become accustomed to breathing through the tube.
