He was beautifully dressed, with a carnation of the correct size in his button-hole, carrying hat and cane in one hand. His manner was warm but respectful.

"How very kind of you to receive me, ma'am." He greeted Mrs. Gresham first, bending over her hand, then made a little bow to Mr. Gresham. "I hope I find you well, sir." Another bow. "Your servant, young ladies."

After a moment of silence I said, "How do you do, Mr. Falcon?" and received a glare from Mrs. Gresham. Her husband cleared his throat and blinked half a dozen times. "I should be obliged if you would tell me the reason for your visit, Falcon, and for this—ah—unexpected gift." He lifted the hand holding the map.
