him quiet, he threw the rock gently into the air and off to his right.

It struck the far wall of the cavern, then dropped to the floor with a clatter and rolled several feet. The ruse proved as successful as Toby hoped it would. Yale Myers, jittery in the silent gloom, heard the sound of the rock and fired his pistol.

Toby had been waiting for precisely this development His rifle was already raised to his shoulder, and his finger was on the trigger. When he saw the flash from Myers's pistol, he quickly took aim, knowing that his life and Rob's depended on his acciu*acy. Then he squeezed the trigger.

The roar of the rifle in the pitch-black cave was not loud enough to drown the sound as Myers screamed, Toby's bullet having hit him in the shoulder. But Myers was still very much alive, and he immediately fired his gun in the direction Toby's shot had come from. The bullet hit the side of the boulder, and fragments of stone flew out and hit Toby in the face, causing him to mutter a curse and take a backward step.

For Mr. Blake, this was enough. His master had commanded him to stay put, but that was before Toby had been nearly shot down and hurt by the stone fragments. The love the shepherd dog bore his master was too great and overcame any command. Mr. Blake launched himself in the direction of the hated enemy, and his jaws closed on the murderer s neck. One mighty wrench of the animal's jaw, and the threat to his master was no more. Yale Myers screamed, then fell to the floor of the cave, the shepherd dog still gripping his throat.

At first the silence that followed was deafening. Then the dog gave a sharp bark.
