Part Two
Chapter Twelve
May 7, 2003
Brandon Dahl rubbed his eyes, awakening from his sleep. Watching the highway roll by and the soothing vibration of the tires proved to be too much for the frail youngster. He lifted his head enough to glance out the window. Like most of the trip so far, there wasn’t much to see—just trees, trees and more trees. When he first got off the plane with his doctor, Allison Cook, for the final leg of their journey, he thought the trees were sort of neat. But that was over five hours ago—being stuck in a car for that amount of time, a fourteen-year-old boy easily got bored by seeing the same surroundings.
“You’re up,” Allison said, from behind the steering wheel. “How are you feeling?”
“Tired,” Brandon replied.
“Do you have a headache? Do you need a pill?”
“No, not yet.” He looked up at her with his dark sunken eyes, turning the bill of his baseball cap forward. It turned easily on his bald head, a side effect of the drugs he had to take. “I hate being sick. I hate my medicine. I’m always tired.”
“I know, Brandon, but you have to keep your spirits up. There’s always hope.”
“That’s what you all keep telling me. But sometimes I think it would be better if I die.”
Allison slammed down on the brake, stopped the car and threw it into park. “I don’t want you to ever say that again!” She had the most stern expression on her face. “Life is a precious gift. You should never wish it away.”
“What difference does it make? My mother died over a year ago. I never knew my father. I have no family. Who would care if I died?”
“I would care.”
“In a few days, I won’t ever see you again. Even the hospital doesn’t want me.”
“Now Brandon, you know that is absolutely not true.”
“I heard some of the nurses talking. The insurance money from my mother’s car accident ran out, and the hospital couldn’t keep me on as a charity case.”
“Some people have very big mouths,” she said, “and don’t know what they’re talking about.”
“Then why are you bringing me to this new place, if the hospital didn’t want to get rid of me?”
“Listen to me, neither the insurance company or the pencil pushers at St. John’s had anything to do with this. We’ve already been over it. Dr. Hamline runs a very special home for children with certain needs.”
“You mean they have cancer.”
She gave a slight nod. “Some do, but not all. His research encompasses many areas.”
“Why me?” Brandon asked.
“Why you what?”
“Why did he pick me for his next lab rat?”
“You won’t be a lab rat. You’ve seen the pictures. It’s a very nice house—a lot of room, a large estate. It’s nothing like those sterile hospitals you’re used to.”
“That still doesn’t explain why,” he said.
“He thought you would be a good candidate for his treatments. He has had some very good results.”
“But how did he find out about me? Who told him?”
“Dr. Benson, I think.
