The girls sat around the low table when I finished, looking bored. There were empty dinner plates in front of them, and a plate full of stale-looking food in the place I wouldâve sat had I joined them.
Jo shrugged at me. âWe called you to dinner at least six times, but you ignored us.â
I had no recollection of them speaking to me at all. âI get in the zone and tune everything out on occasion. I appreciate you thinking of me, however.â
âItâs not really edible anymore, unfortunately,â Cia said. âWe can make you something else.â
âThatâs all right,â I replied. âIâm not really hungry. Iâm too excited, I suppose.â
Cia smiled at me. âThen we are excited too. We may not understand your process, but we have faith in the results that will come from it.â
Iris joined Cia in smiling at me. âThat took you so long. It must be quite taxing on your mind.â
âQuite the opposite, in fact. It makes me feel invigorated,â I told her. âMore alive, almost.â
Iris stood up, taking her plate with her. âIn that case, I say we celebrate your genius!â She shot a knowing glance down at the other girls.
âYes, I agree. A celebration is in order,â Cia agreed, standing as well. âWeâll go to the mountaintop.â
âThe mountaintop? Isnât it dark out?â I asked, peering through a window into blackness.
âDonât worry, weâll be able to get there quickly,â Jo said, helping the others clear the table.
When they finished cleaning up the dinner I didnât eat, Jo took me by the hand, and the four of us left the house. The night air was crisp but not cold and smelled of lightly scented flowers I didnât recognize. The stars and galaxies above shone just enough light to make walking relatively easy.
The girls led me around the back of the house, and we began trekking the same path that took us to the Tauron Cluster. The mountains rose beside us, and I could see much further ahead of us than I had the first trip when I didnât know what was there. We were about half the distance of my first trip when the girls stopped, then made a sharp left and walked us right up to the bottom of one of the mountains. There was a small indent in the furry bushes that covered the entire mountainside. Cia walked into the indent, which was only a few feet in depth, and pounded on the mountain with her fists.
âBeating up the rock gets us to the top of the mountain?â I joked, having no clue what Cia was doing.
âNo,â Iris giggled, wrapping her tail up around her arm. âWater is what gets us to the top of the mountain.â
âWhatââ
I was interrupted by a thunderous rumbling. Cia stepped back, and the mountainside opened an invisible door directly in front of her. At first, there was a dark, gaping hole behind the door. Then the rumbling got louder, and, right before my eyes, a massive rush of sparkling, dark water rushed out.
