The quiet presses against me like water, crushing my lungs, stealing my breath, until I’m just about drowning here. I shift position to prove to myself that I can, and my hand brushes over Ritchie’s knee in the darkness. So the back seat isn’t as big as I thought. But I can’t even seem to touch him—my hand burns where it glanced over his knee, and I still feel the imprint of his fingers on my arm. Now what? The phrase hangs between us as if resonating in the air, like the fading echo of a dying bell. I open my mouth to say something, anything, and find that my throat has closed around whatever it is I was going to say.
