CHAPTER 27

A WEEK BEFORE THE anniversary of Missy’s murder, Karen Severson enrolled in the Modern Beauty Academy in Panorama City. After a lifetime of being far less than beautiful and a year of practicing makeup techniques on little Andrea, Karen had decided to become a beautician.

The beauty school was just a few blocks from the apartment she and Jimmy had shared more than a year before. It was ten miles outside Arleta, and even though there were beauty schools closer to home, Karen was familiar with the academy’s success rate and thought it worth the drive. She had even talked it over with Missy one night and Missy had agreed. After all, Karen couldn’t very well take Missy’s place if she didn’t first learn something about beauty.

Although Karen and Andrea had moved back home, Karen still spent nearly all her time at the Avila house; but now she had decided it was time for her to find a life of her own.

Lynne Robbins was among the students looking forward to the first day of beauty school. She had heard good things about the school and, after trying other occupational jobs, was certain she had finally found her niche.

At age twenty-four, Lynne Robbins was a friendly girl with long dark hair and a pretty smile. She would have been happier if she could lose a little weight, but she still had an attractive figure and a beautiful face marked by high cheekbones. Lynne hadn’t grown up in the Arleta area but had moved there with her boyfriend. Now the two were engaged to be married. Lynne thought it the perfect time to be starting her career as a beautician. The past year had not been easy. Several months earlier Lynne’s best friend, Amy, had killed herself. By now the shock had worn off, but Lynne still struggled with the haunting questions. Why suicide? Some nights, when Lynne couldn’t sleep, she wondered if she could have done something to help her friend. Beauty school would be more than the beginning of a career for Lynne Robbins. It would be a turning point to help her put that horrible day out of her life forever.

Lynne found the school’s address on the side of a large cement building and parked on the street outside. “Here goes,” she mumbled to herself as she walked up to the receptionist’s desk and picked up a packet of course materials. The receptionist said there would be at least twenty other students in the class. Lynne took a seat.

Five minutes later, while she was thumbing through the school’s literature, a heavyset, frumpy-looking girl with greasy dark hair took the seat next to hers. Lynne looked up and flashed a nervous smile.

“Hi. I’m Lynne. You a first-timer, too?”

The girl nodded, and Lynne thought she looked very confident, considering her appearance. She didn’t really look like someone who knew much about beauty.

“I’m Karen. Karen Severson. And I’m here because I need a change.”

Lynne laughed. “I know what you mean. That’s part of why I’m here too.
