Isaac
Before Ethan started working Isaacâs case, he had to read a lot of literature. Isaac fell into that category of missing persons where no one was looking for him, no one wanted him, and no one knew where to look.
The boy was 17 years old. He lived in a compound in Southern Utah on the border of northern Arizona. The Fundamentalist Mormon Church had been in the news about two years previous when two of the important leaders of the church had been sent to prison for statutory rape of their young girls. Allegedly the girls were taken as polygamist wives. They were also in prison because they applied for and received welfare benefits for all their illegitimate children.
One of the dirty little secrets that didnât come out loud and clear at the long trials was what they did with young men. The older leaders didnât want to compete with the good-looking younger boys so when they turned 16 (or in some cases 17), they were taken out into the desert, given $20.00 and sent on their way to find their own life.
Usually they were never heard from again. Some made it to cities in Utah, some made it to cities in Arizona or Nevada. Some didnât make it all.
Isaac was the son of a young girl who had him when she was 13 years old. She was 29 now and the mother of five children.
When she learned the Isaac was gone, she waited until she could get to one of the phones in the area and called the police in Phoenix and told them what had happened. She hung up before she could give her name.
Luckily, Phoenix was the right place to call. Many of the âlost boysâ did live in Phoenix. There were minimum wage jobs there and there were several nice people who would take care of the good natured and hardworking boys.
Phoenix worked on the case for three months but couldnât find him. All the usual places were verified, and they could not find him. Unlike some of the boys, he seemed to have been thrown out of the compound alone. Sometimes they were sent out in pairs.
His mother wouldnât speak to the police and neither would anyone else in the area. Because he was 16, he was classified as a runaway. They had their own schools so there was no independent discussion of what the boy was like. There were no pictures of him. All they knew was a description from a very frightened young girl who had lived in the compound and managed to escape. She said he was good looking, blonde, about 6â foot tall and thin. Like most of the boys, they were given very little food and they were told to work in the fields most of the time.
After 90 days since no one could find hm, his case was given to Ethan. He was given the names of two young men who lived in Phoenix and had left the compound under similar circumstances.
